Question about Philips CDR770 CD Recorder

2 Answers

Recording Errors We have an older Philips CD Recorder with just the single disc. We use this recorder to record our church services on Sundays. Previously, we haven't had any problems recording our services, but for the past 3 weeks I have had the same problem. When I put a disc in to record the service, somehow the CD is stopping and showing that the CD has recorded the full 79:57 that the CD will hold, although the full 79:57 hasn't passed. In other words, when I put the CD in I always note the time that we start so I know when to stop it. I always go over and stand next to the Recorder when there's about 5 minutes left. For the past 3 weeks, the recorder has stopped on it's own although the full time hadn't passed. And then when I have tried to finalize the CD's the recorder just displays "Disc Error" across the screen. We have been using this Recorder for a year now, and this is the first time I have encountered this problem. In fact, this past Sunday, I actually stood there by the recorder and watched it. After about maybe 30 minutes, the CD stopped and on the screen displayed 2 tracks and a time of 79:57, and when I tried to finalize the CD it wouldn't finalize. I then put in another CD and this time, the CD stopped after about 25 minutes. I then put in another CD and had the same problem. I then put in a 4th and final CD and this one actually did record until I hit stop, and it did finalize. But I still don't have anything from the first 3 CD's. We are using the CD's that say CD-Music, and before I record, I hit the Record Type button until it displays "Record Manual" on the screen. I then hit record once service starts. I always follow the same steps and as I stated earlier, we have been doing this for a year, and we've never had this particular problem. Is there a reason this is happening and what is/are the way(s) to resolve it? Also, I have noticed that when we first started using this Recorder, if the service ran over one CD, I could take out the first CD without finalizing it, and put in a second CD. When the service ended, I could finalize the second CD and then put the first CD back in and finalize it. But I have not been able to do that for the last few weeks even before I started having the problem mentioned before this with the CD stopping on it's own. When I take out the first CD and put the second CD in and finalize the second CD first, the machine won't let me go back and finalize the first CD. When I put the first CD back in, the screen displays "Disc Error" across the screen. Is there a way to correct this problem or do I have to finalize the first CD before putting a second CD in? The reason we were doing this is so that there isn't a big gap in the service between the CD's since it takes the machine 2:10 to finalize a CD. Thank you

Hi. I did a google search to see how to fix mine. It's doing the same exact thing. I wonder if the CD's are the problem. I hadnt'had problems in the past, but I'm thinking maybe the companies are making their cds's a little different with the speed. I use the audio cdr's but I have had this problem.

Do as it asks, insert blank CD-Audio or CD-Music media.

Discs for recording
For recording, make sure to use special audio discs only.
These discs are marked with “Digital Audio” and the logos shown below.
There are two different types of audio discs for the use on this CD recorder:
– CD-Audio Recordable (CDR) discs
These discs can be recorded on once and
play in all standard CD players and CD
recorders, when they are finalized.
– CD-Audio ReWritable (CDRW) discs
These discs can be recorded on, erased and
re-recorded many times and play in CDRW
compatible CD players and CD recorders,
when they are finalized.
– All Philips CD players and CD recorders
with the sticker shown here are CDRW
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of Philips audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only.
Note: Do not use a computer CDR or CDRW as recording will not work!

Go here and download the manual. You'll need it.

I have this recorder and when I go to burn a cd,

Always 1/3? Try just playing a full CD through it to see if it can smoothly accesss the whole disc in a linear fashion just like a recording would do. Might be something physical if it has problems at the same relative positions recording and playing. Otherwise, ther're really no reason an electronic failure should care where on the disc it fails.

It wont record all my cd tracks, its starts

Sounds more like it won't record ANY of your CD tracks. Is there any indication why? Are you sure it has audio coming in? Many CD recorders will automatically stop recording if they sense extended silence.

Your laser is failing. There is a test mode sequence you can try to re-calibrate it but to be honest it's the beginning of the end. I can supply replacement laser assemblies depending on where you are in the world or I can email you the service manual so you can try adjusting it yourself. Email me via ebay - fluffcat1

Audio cdrw's are still freely available in the UK.

Recording to cd

Disc recover occurs when the power goes off and comes back on halfway through a disc being recorded. Try a new disc? You may have a faulty PCB on the record side.
