Replacing drive belts on Sony TC-WR535

How hard is it to replace the drive belts on Sony TC-WR535? I'd hate to throw it out. Can anybody recommended an online source for a service manual for this unit? Thanks! Dan

I do not see pink long screws on my tc-wr535. Can you please be more specific on accessing drive belts. Thanks

Its not easy, but doable. Steps are:
1. Remove top lid (4 screws on the side)
2. remove the back plastic mount on the mechanics (2 pink long screws on the top). The bottom are two plastic hook lock.  The mount pulls back and the belt and pulleys are exposed.  NOTE: It is the mount you are removing, not the tape deck itself.

In case you have to remove the printed board, here is the instructions:
Unplug all wires from the board.  Remove 3 screws.  hard part - release the board from the three white plastic lock. To do this, you crimp the the top and gently pull the board to the top.  Then slide the board backward to release it from the socket connection on the tape deck pcb.

I am having the same problem with a Sony K717 ES. I found
this site above where they have the service manual for every tape cassette known to man. They ask that you make a donation to
a charity and then they will email you the pdf for free.

Anybody you know who restore turntables?

Most turntables require a new drive belt. The cartridge sometimes needs replacing. Cahngers require much more maintenance. Hardly anybody does this anymore... but if belt has deteriorated, that is DIY as you can find suppliers of the belt online.

I have a sony TC-WR770 twin tape deck. The 1st deck is running with inconsistant speed causeing slurring of sound, also it will not fast forword. Can this be repaired and if so how? or is it now to old.

It could be either a worn roller, but more likely a belt problem. It's often a good idea to replace the belt(s) as the are rubber and wear out easily. They are not expensive either. Drive belts on tape decks are mostly universal. You only need to measure the diameter of each belt in mm and then enter the result in Google as "Cassette drive belt ??mm".
Make a note of how it fits before replacing them, that's if you can do it yourself of course!

Sony tc-wr535 won't eject. Tape stuck. Won't play cassette on either deck A or B .makes noises but won't FF or play, gets stuck and wont eject. Will belt conditioner work? What do I use?

The problem, according to messages on your site, is that the belts are old and have stretched. There is a great step by step tutorial on www.Instructables.com with pictures and all. Parts are not too hard to find on search engine. Looks like less than $25 to fix.

Replacing bands

Since the belts control the timing of the mechanism, I would not recommend this as a home repair. While relatively simple compared to some, this still is a delicate repair that can easily go wrong. Please bring this unit to an audio repair shop. Expect a parts cost in the $15-$20 range. There are 3 belts inside.

Need set of three belts for Toshiba Model M-441 VCR, S/N 82726647. Hate to throw unit away, trying to fix so I can play old Video tapes. Is a belt set still available for this old unit? Ralph Trew

You can get the belts from many suppliers, try "MCM Electronics". Be sure to clean the pulleys with q-tips & acetone before replacing the belts.

Both tape compartments will not eject. Mod. TC-WR535.

I just got two tapes out of my WR535 this morning. I removed the top cover by taking out the screws on the lower sides. It was obvious that the drive belts were stretched out. This seems to be preventing the doors from opening, as the transport mechanism seems to be in PLAY mode without the belts functioning. WIth the cover off you'll be able to see the mechanism that opens the door. There's a small nylon piece that prevents the mechanism from opening the door. Push it downwards with a small screwdriver and the OPEN button will function. You can now retrieve your tapes. I was just looking online for a service manual to see if it's worth trying to change the belts. Not sure yet. Good luck! Dan
