Question about Dell Inspiron 6000 Notebook

2 Answers

No Power We've had an Inspiron 6000 for 4 years, no issues until tonight. We went to turn it on and it never powers up. It will start to but then shut down after about 20 seconds. During the short period of time when the computer is attempting to power up, the caps lock indicator flashes. This happens both when plugged in and when off the charger. I tried switching batteries too and same problem.

Hi,

This can be caused by several problems.

1st, It could be locked in a standby or hibenate loop.

to test and repair this problem all you need to do is unplug it, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then re-insert the battery plug in the AC and try powering it up.

If that doesn't work the next most likely given the age is either a failed AC adapter or broken power jack. once again unplug the AC and remove the battery. this time use a pen or small file to test the pin in the center, if it has more than 1/2mm of give it's likely broken. This can be repaired for $100-$200. If it's still firmly in place it's either the AC adapter or Motherboard which has failed.

Most computer stores can test and replace the AC adapter if it has failed, if it's the motherboard on a 4 year old laptop it's likely not worth repairing, as you can purchase new laptops for under $600

Yeah such problems have only two reasons behind it. Firstly, any power module of its motherboard is having problems due to heat sinking. secondly, its RAM has some faults. Since RAM is not so costly so i recommend you to replace it with newer one and check again. If problems still persists then only go for motherboard repair or analysis... rate this solution if it is really helpful to you

The input jack that is soldered to the motherboard (where the AC jack plugs in) probably has a cold solder joint. Thus the laptop switches from battery to AC power. You can try to have the solder joints
re-soldered.

Try to remove the battery and connect the power adapter and the cord only. Making sure that the power adapter has a green light. Then try turning on your laptop. If it fails then the power adapter is broken, you are going to need a new one, exact model of the power adapter. In any case, you can always recover your files by removing the hard drive from your laptop and insertng it to an external casing so that it will be an external hard drive. By this, you can connect this to another computer thru usb connection where you can back up your important files.

Inspiron 6000 starts to boot but then shuts down after only 10 seconds. New Battery, power supply measures ok. Caps lite is on.

Try reseating the RAM memory modules, see if any change.
If no change, remove, battery, Drives, Wireless card and RAM, see if the system will run longer or give an error code. If something changes, add 1 RAM module and try again. If the system runs, then add items back one at a time until you determine the faulty item.
If the system issue doesn't change, odds are a motherboard problem. Motherboard are about $100 on Ebay

On ac power when you hit the power button, if there are no lights, it could be the power supply. If there are lights, try starting it without the battery, ac only. If there are lights and it still doesn't start after removing the battery, try a different memory chip. On Dell machines the battery can acquire a dead short causing it to not start. Also if the memory chip/chips have gone out it will cause it not to start. If it still will not start after these three it's a motherboard problem and will most likely have to be replaced.
