Is the brightness ok if the charger is connected to the laptop and dull when the charger is not connected - also what operatng system are you using ???

hi, the power jack must be removed by a strip out and de solder of jack and a new one fitted. I was lucky a guy took £30 for the job.

You have a ground fault issue in the DC JACK.
There are escentially 4 circuits in the jack and one is not making contact.
1: Negative Charge circuit (outter ring)
2: Negative Run circuit (outter ring)
3 Positive (Inner Ring)
4: Signal (center pin)
I believe the negative charge circuit (outter ring) is not making contact internally. Typically what happens on that model DC Jack is the tension contact metal becomes fatigued, and does not touch the outter ring.
This could come from Heat causing early fatigue of the metal.
Or normal wear, the metal has simply worn out from regular insert/removal.

Just call Dell, don't take it back to Best Buy or anything (that's where I got my Inspiron 1565). They will put you through a couple troubleshooting items and decide whether it's the AC adapter went bad or if they have to replace your motherboard. It's all free since they have a 1yr hardware warranty.

The backlight in your LCD has gone out. You will need to replace the entire LCD. You can look on ebay or here, you will be paying around $300 for it.

you need to go to the bios. and change the boot/start menu there.
when you start your pc. press f2 continuously and you will see a blue screen. go to start/boot using arrow keys. make sure that the num 1 priority is externall hdd or usb
