Toshiba aspire boots normally but moving the cursor or any key and the screen goes dark.

  • Ralph Thomas Oct 14, 2013

The computer is actually a Toshiba Satellite C655 running Win 7. The screen looks normal during boot, ie the brightness and contrast is normal & remains that way through the Win Logo and request for PW. If I touch the mouse or any key durring this process the screen goes almost black. I can barely make out the desktop & cursor movement.

Try using a PS2 mouse and PS2 keyboard. It may be that your USB ports have lost their setup (assuming that you are using USB or wireless mouse and keyboard). If the PS2 hardware works fine, check that your USB ports are enabled in the BIOS, then check your device drivers in Windows to see that the USB hardware is recognized.

Monitor comes up black i can see the cursor but nothing else any ideas? it boots normally but once past the boot screen its all black with just the cursor showing

Nevermind the more I thought about it, your not getting to the operating system. The PCs used to say something to the effect of 'operating system not found' after the POST if it could not find a boot device. I think that's what's happening here, you have to go into to BIOS and see if it can detect the hard drive. When the laptop boots look for a message saying 'press F1 for setup' or something along those lines... if it comes up too quick to see start hitting F1, Esc, Del keys right after the power lights comes on, BIOS is usually one of those keys. Once in BIOS look for a 'devices' type tab and search for where it reads the hard drive If there's nothing there then its your problem, and you need to get the BIOS to autodetect it. Respond if you have questions.

Check if your hard rive indicator light is flashing (has disc shape icon or can shape icon next to it). If it is then put in your windows disc and do a startup repair. Make sure it is booting from the disc drive first. if it isnt flashing then you may have a dead hard drive. Try taking the hard drive out and putting it back in.

Screen goes blank(not Black, but dark) after windows boots

Perhaps it is trying to power an external monitor. Try this: Once your computer boots up, hold down the "fn" key (usually bottom row of keyboard) and then hit the key that shows what looks to be a monitor on it. Usually on the Toshibas, its the F5 key. This key will always be in the F key row. Let me know if this helps.
