C400. DVD - ok! CD- cannot see!!

I have a problem with my CD/DVD ROM. DVD disks work OK, but it cannot see CD disks. I tried different CD disks. Once a DELL installation disk worked, but others - no. And later even this DELL disk did not work again.. Previouselly my CD/DVD ROM worked OK. Windows was reinstalled successfully when hard drive corrupted and was replaced under DELL warranty. Please help, if anyone can! I cannot install software because of this!!

Hi,

you can try the steps below to fix this issue.

Edit the registry:-
1. Click Start, and click Run.
2. Type regedit in the Open box, and click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, click the plus (+) sign next to each folder name to expand the following registry path:
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
5. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
6. In the right pane, right-click Upper Filters, and click Delete.
7. Click yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
8. In the right pane, right-click Lower Filters, and click Delete.
9. Click yes again.
10.Close the window and restart the computer

Please do not forget to rate the solution.

Regards,
Musheer.

Cd/dvd rom cd not working

I would first suggest to clean the drive with a cleaning disc, can be purchased at any electronics store, it's a cd with microfober brushes on it that cleans the drive as this disc spins.

Extrenal cd rom will not boot

Go into the setup menu on boot (before the windows screen appears) by pressing F2 or F10.
Go to the Boot Options and check that the CD-ROM/USB Device boots before the hard disk drive. Save and Exit.

O.K. now that I installed my DVD/CD Rom it will

i think this is a common problem we encounter when DVD rom lens is becoming faulty. it can only read cd but not DVD then after some time wont read any disk at all. if your drive still has store warranty it would be best to claim the warranty. i tried fixing this kinda problem but it cost me almost the price of a new 1 LOL.

Cant install xp to dell c400 with external cd-rom

This is how I did it, you may or may not have the ability. A basic knowledge of Dos is necessary 1) I used another laptop but you could use an adapter to use the hard drive in a regular computer. 2)boot with a windows 98 boot disk, fdisk it to a fat32 partition, make the hard drive a system boot disk (format /s c:) 3) copy the i386 folder and all its contents from a full or full oem (not branded) disk to the laptop drive, also copy smartdrv and highmem.sys from the floppy (speeds thing up dramatically) and create a config.sys file with device=highmem.sys 4)physically install the hard drive back into the C400, boot to dos run smartdrv.exe, then go to the i386 folder and type winnt.exe (enter) wooo should work. Inside your DVD rom is two heads I believe they are diamond both do the same things which is to read them. The CD head is poked (Broken). Try cleaning it with the proper solution. If its no go then the latter I am afraid stands!.
