Cuts off and displays "Protect"

My Harmon Kardon receiver is an older model as I've had it for at least 6 years. Don't know model number as I'm not at home. Anyway, most the tuner will play for about 10 minutes, then it cuts off and displays the work "Protect" on the screen. Puzzled? Don't have the manual as I bought it from a friend, and I haven't really messed with much because I don't want to screw something up.

I haven't been home to look at the speakers yet. I have a new power surge cord and a new LCD HD tv to hook it up to. I'll see if any of this makes a difference. Thanks.

Thanks again. I emailed Harmon Kardon with the problem and they stated it was most likely the speakers, possible positive and negative wires touching on one of the speakers, and gave me a test to do on the system to check which speaker. Thanks.

The protect light comes on when the amp cuts off the speakers to protect them from damage if something's wrong in the amp, or to protect the amp from speaker or wiring problems. If the amp plays for a while before cutting off, it's probably a thermal problem in the output stages. One of the output devices may be acting up as it heats up, or it could be bad connections that open up because of the heat. The trouble might also be caused by components in the power supply as well. Without having the unit on the service bench to check it, it's not possible to suggest specific things to look at. The manual wouldn't help you other than to say check your speaker connections and then have it serviced. The best thing to do if you want to keep this is to find a servicer in your area and get an estimate for the repair. Or if you or a friend is technically inclined, look into purchasing a service manual and see if you can do-it-yourself.

Check the speakers and wires for sure, but the power supply I was talking about is the one inside the receiver. While a surge protector is a good idea, it's not going to take care of the protect problem. Good luck!

I have a Harmon Kardon Reciever a friend gave to me that keeps reading protect what does this mean?

Google search your manufacturer make and model and the word manual. If one is available, you can find it in the search results.

When i turn on my harmon kardon avr 165 it shows ''Protect'' and then it turns off again?? what can i do :)

I would try disconnecting the speakers, then turn it on. If protect still shows with no speakers connected, then it needs to go to the repair shop- Might be a blown power transistor.

My Harmon Kardon AVR 2600 goes to protect mode when powered up. After many tries it will fire up but at times it's up to twenty times. I did load the software upgrade 6 months and it has been fine

Check all speaker wiring for shorts, if okay! there is a problem in the audio output stage of the unit or the protection circuit is not working properly. I would suggest a pro to evaluate.

How do I disassemble + clean Harmon Kardon SoundStick subwoofer?

Check for a Fuse. Mine is an older model and has a Fuse right next to the power cord. It probably has a slot for a flathead screwdriver.

Harmon Kardon AVR300.**protect** blinks when powered on.Took cover off no obvious problem.Disconnected EVERYTHING from back panel, still blinks **PROTECT**.

The protect message means that the outputs are shorted. This is a fairly common problem that can easily be fixed by any shop that handles audio gear. Expect a parts cost in the $20-$40 range.

Harmon kardon 745 displays "unlock" no sound for tv or movies

I also had this UNLOCK message on my Harman Cardon AVR 130.
The reason for this error was - in a hurry I've plugged the optical input into optical OUT! Double check that your connections in the back are correct and hopefully it fixes your problem.

Was using the harmon kardon avr 225 receiver and the front panel went out. .... screen display of the channel number, volume, or menu item does not work. ...

Try hooking up a yellow video wire from the back of the AVR 225 Monitor out. Should be at the end of the 7 or 8 yellow video ports on the back of the stereo. Next plug the other end into a yellow video in on a t.v. Get your remote, (Harmon/Kardon) and make sure the t.v. is on the correct video input and hit the OSD(on screen display) button on your harmon remote. There should be a setting in there that says VFD under ADVANCED menu option that allows for turning the front of your stereo lights on and off and dimming them half way also. OFF/HALF/FULL are the 3 options I believe.

If this doesnt solve it your display may have crapped out on you.
