Re: Thermador Microwave setup

Hi, I purchased a Thermador Microwave(used) and just had it installed. It came w/out a manual. Upon plugging in the display reads- refer to the manual for set up. What do I need to do make it work. Thanks, Ritzy

Replace Thermador MBBS with Panasonic or other brand

We too had the Thermador MBBS as part of a built in microwave/convection oven set. Installed in 2006. Everything was fine till the microwave started sparking and arcing. Appears the interior of the oven deteriorated, allowing a catastrophic failure. I reached out to Thermador, and they were NO HELP. All they provided was a list of their current microwaves, none of which would fit the opening. Turns out an LG LMC2075ST microwave is what you want. I got one at Home Depot for just over $200.

Removal of the old microwave was straightforward. Take the turntable out of the oven. The trim panel surrounding the unit is hinged on the bottom. Open the door and you can pull the two upper corners out one at a time, and lower the trim. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the trim to the hinges, and set it aside.

Open the microwave door, and you'll see three screws that hold the microwave base down in the opening. Remove them, and you can pull the whole unit forward. Have a helper unplug the oven's cord from the outlet in the upper rear of the cavity. You can now pull the entire assembly out.

I put the oven top down on a protected table. The base is attached to the oven with 11/16" bolts. I used a socket wrench to remove them. Putting the new oven next to it, you'll see it has four plastic feet. Very carefully pry them out, not damaging the holes they're pressed into. Now laying the base over the new oven, you can bolt it down.

Flip the oven over. The old unit has sheet metal glued to the case, acting as a path for hot air to travel from the rear of the oven forward to vent. Rather than pry this metal off the old oven, I took out all the screws holding the cover on, and removed it. Interestingly, I found parts inside indicating LG made this oven!

Removing the new case, I switched the two. The new oven is slightly different, and I took tin snips to make a couple of deep cuts to allow the baffle to fit correctly on the rear of the oven. Took a couple of minutes. Screwed everything back together, and reinstalled the unit, reversing the removal process.

Trim fit exactly, and other than saying LG on the door, it looks great. New oven functions are slightly different from the 15 year old unit, but so what? I spent just over $200 and an hour of my time. A new combination unit would have been over $5,000, and there was nothing wrong with our old oven!a70426a9-1dbf-4d08-ac34-9b078bbc30d5.jpeg
