Motorola SBG900 looses internet connection

My modem looses it's internet connection periodically. When connected to my laptop (Windows XP) there was not a problem. But when connected to my new Gateway (Windows Vista) I loose internet connection almost every 5 minutes. The lights on the modem turn off except for the power light and then they come back on again. Are there any solutions for this problem? Is it a Motorola problem?

SOURCE: Re-starting a ARRIS modem after a loss of power

You can try doing a "Hard reset" on the modem but it looks like you've tried most combinations. To do the hard reset: - unplug the coax cable from the back of the modem - Push and hold the "reset" button in for 15 seconds - Allow the modem 30 seconds to reinitialize and then plug the coax cable back in. Within 10minutes you should have activity back. If not, the modem needs to be replaced. I know you may have tried something similar to this but I'm hoping this may help.

SOURCE: losing connection

I assume this is a cable modem? You need to call your cable company and have a trouble ticket created. I worked for the cable company installing cable for quite a while and I bet my paycheck the signal getting to the modem are below specs and that's why the modem gets dropping the internet connection.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Arris cable modem

if the power light is flashing then the modem is on battery backup and internet is disabled. plug the power cord into the modem or find a working power outlet, you should be set after that.

Power light flashing=bad

Update your drivers and then do a speed test. Most isp send updates to the subscribers when they update, yours may not. Don't forget to check all of your connections before wasting time calling your isp. I trust this test the most. Rember you don't always get what you pay for.

Internet only works for 20 minutes after restart.

Yep. Guessing the router is older. They don't last long. Modems live forever but routers average 6-18 months. Other things are funny about this. Your router works on 2.4 ghz. Cordless phone and microwaves do too. if you have a cordless base close to the router it can knock it offline. If your router is old get a new one. MAKE SURE IT IS AN "N" SERIES AND NOT A "G" SERIES

Home Networking

Is the laptop an xp machine? If so:

In order to access shared files on a Windows XP computer (or any computer running Samba) from a Mac, the Mac will need to "connect" to the Windows XP computer and "mount" the shared files.

Instructions:

Start at the "Go" drop down menu at the top of your screen, then "Connect to server".
If the computer you wish to connect to is listed, just select it from the list.
If the computer is not listed, type into the "Server Address" field 'smb://' followed by the computer name or IP address of the computer to which you want to connect.
Click the "Connect" button in the bottom right corner of the window. See more at the link below:
