A motorhome with Hp of a nissan z24 engine, can it climb steep altitudes? i.e. Andes mountains or the weight of the motorhome would be too much for the engine?

  • Marcelo Oct 07, 2013

Thanks David! Actually I do not have an overheating problem. I'm considering buying a motorhome ('84 Nissan, 4 cyl and 130HP) and I'm asking if the engine will overheat easily going up steep hills, because of the wight of the motorhome.

A few ideas. 1) Try the motor home where you are now and see. Find some REALLY steep hills or something and try it out.
2) If it is an automatic transmission, you may need to purchase a "transmission cooler" kit to add on before you try mountain climbing.
3) If it is a stick shift, take along another clutch disc and pressure plate and throwout bearing in case you burn yours up.
4) And remember, cars and trucks that normally operate at sea level will not do well in high mountains. They need to have the timing and/or carburetor set for high altitudes.
5) Many countries outside the USA have different octane ratings on their gasoline, you will need to take along the stuff to set your engine to the octane rating of the gas you buy.

At 130 hp and a motorhome on top of it, would the engine overheat easily, specially going up steep hills?

  • David Ellis Rhea Oct 07, 2013

Your overheating problem is a whyole other issue. I(t should not overheat at all. That must be fixed befopre you take a trip anywhere. I hVave a 1992 Hoda civic that has been overheating for a year. I have spent now 2,000 dollars to get it fixed, it is not fixed. I must now sell it to the junkyard. I hope someone can fix your problem. Be blessed.

SOURCE: 1995 Nissan Serena stops running after 1 hour of driving up and down hills

It sounds like a electrical problem would advise to take it to a mechanic to see if there is signal from a sensor dropping out for example a crank sensor being faulty would cause a car to stop running. would like to no more information on the wont turn over such as do you have power, lights on inside the dash does it try to crank but just not start.

I have a Toyota Corolla 1,6 year 1984. Well maintained, services up to date. Will it be detrimental to engine if I drive steep hills with the car? I have to climb a steep hill to reach work.

No
not if you drive it accordingly
steep hills are best negotiated in low fears with plenty of rpm applied
for example on a steep grade with a manual 1st or 2nd or possibly 3rd and the rpm around 2000 constant will cause it no harm
automatics will go to first automatically so keep the rpm at that mark
engine damage is experienced when the gear selected is too high and the engine is placed under extreme load so down shift to allow the engine to work easily
When going down hill select first and only use the brakes to maintain the 2000 rpm range and allow the engine compression to hold the car speed back
the rule of thumb for experienced drivers is this
you select the same gear to go down that it took to come up

If timing in a 1988 Chevy nova is not correct will this contribute to engine overheating

It could, but only under certain conditions, such as climbing a steep mountain.
The engine would also have very little power.
An exhaust restriction could also cause both symptoms.

I'm not sure that you have a problem at all because you have a comparatively heavy vehicle with a small engine, and many vehicles struggle to climb mountain roads. Definitely, from your description of the problem, you wouldn't need a valve job.

Try running a good fuel system cleaner through it. Sitting alot allows condensation to form in fuel tank. Also condensation forms on plugs, etc... Pill plugs and inspect, but do run system cleaner regularly.
