Please go to my website . I have the latest version of SSC Service Utility to download directly onto your computer and instructions on how to use it, what to click on etc etc. Click any of the Epson links if you can't find it, everything you need to know will be there, including printer Firmware resetting which sorts out a multitude of problems.

The 'maintenance required' problem with Epson printers has absolutely nothing to do with which cartridges you are using, it is a built in page counter in your printer firmware, which has a different maximum amount for each Epson model. Don't listen to old wives tales and heresay, we are the experts and it's an Epson scam to cause a lot of people to pay for maintenance or throw their printers away.
I haven't found a model that can't be reset with the latest version of SSC Serve or the manual reset on my site.

For Epson RX500 users there is also a manual reset on my site, as the SSC Serve software won't do it for you.
When using the program & choosing your printer from the list, it may have a weird name with 'x' in the model number, this is because some configurations are for many models in a series. For example, the C46 will be listed as C4x as it is for the C42, C44 & C46 models.

I hope this helps all Epson users to overcome the Epson scam of page counting and locking out until you pay their dealers money for maintenance.

If you like what I've done for Epson users, please show your appreciation by spreading the word and perhaps buying your ink from my site.

Happy trouble free printing

Changed ink both ink and paper light are flashing can not reset them

It says that your inkpad inside the printer has to be changed. You may see the error in your pinters status monitor quoting "An internal part of your printer is aged. Service maintenane is required." An cost effective way to solve this problem is download SSC service utility and clear the service required error.

All the lights on the printer control panel just flash on & off. It is a stylus color 880.

Hello vacadoe,

1. First of all, try to download the latest version of the printer driver and have that installed.

2. Next, open the printer cover and manually inspect the inside to see if there is any paper piece or foreign material that may be obstructing the printer. Also inspect the carriage return to see if there is any obstruction there. The carriage should park on the right side by default.

3. Try to reseat the ink cartridges again. Do it one at a time and take notice of if they feel and look as though they are sat right; when you first sit them in the carriage before you close the lid they don't look like they are in properly, they give the illusion that the back of it should be lower down than it actually is. Make sure you haven't assumed this and tried to make them sit lower. Also clean the printer head.

4. To rule out the computer and the cords, unplug it from the computer and power it on. If it powers up normally, then you have narrowed it down to a cable or problem in the computer. In this case consider repalcing the cables. Also try unplugging the printer (vs. using the panel switch) for 5 min or so and then re powering. After about 5mins, reconnect the printer to your computer, making sure are connections are secure.

5. Download the SSC Service Utility. It is a must-have free utility for Epson Stylus printer users. Try the SSC reset feature .,
You can use the SSC service utility to reset the protection counter.
You can also use the control paler to reset the counter. Timing is the key to success when you reset the counter using the control panel so keep that in mind.

To reset the protection counter using the control panel (front panel) :
Step 1.Turn the power on while hold the following buttons. Paper feed, cleaning button. (the paper out light will flash for 3 seconds)
Step 2.While the paper out light is still flashing press the cleaning button for 10 seconds. The following LED's will flash in sequence - Ink out lights black and color, Paper out light. Once the printer starts to initialize the counter should be reset.

This will reset the protection counter. Again timing is the key to get the the above sequence to work. The timing is tricky but once you have it down it works like a charm. If it doesnt work the first time, please try 2 or 3 times until you get the timing correct. Also it is a good idea to replace or clean the absorber pads For info on the basic process try this link

6. You must use the SSC Utility to re-zero the protection counter. If the SSC throws up a message "Printer off or some other problem" it's usually due to some unfinished job held in memory. Just turn the printer off and wait a minute then restart it. The SSC Utility should then function. You can probably reset this counter one or two times before you will have to open up the printer. You have to extract the waste ink pad in the base and either fit a new one or simply wash and dry the old one. It's probably good for a couple of washes but is fragile and will start to disintegrate in time. Next, uninstall the Epson Status Monitor (aka Epson Ink Waster) and use SSC for all your ink servicing. You will probably have to uninstall the complete Epson software bundle to get rid of the Status Monitor but it's well worth doing. Just reinstall the driver and any application stuff you need.

Hope that helps...Should you have any further questions, please feel free to post them here.

How to reset 73/91 Cartridges for Epson CX5500

SSC utility is used for resetting waste ink counter, not for ink level counter (chip at ink tank). If you wish to reset ink level counter (chip), you must use hardware resetter, or use CISS chip with autoreset function.

Epsom R200 printer - ink and paper lights flashing red.

theres a guide on how to manually reset the counter here
unless you replace or clean the waste pad from here on in regard your printer as a ticking ink bomb. put it on a tray with a lip just incase of an ink overflow and dont put it on the carpet.

SSC can't reset ink level. Printer read ink level counter in chip, not actually. Use chip with autoreset function.

Epson 2400 paper red light and ink red light

It sounds like your printer has reached what is often called the "service required" stage...

To solve this you need to handle two things.

1. Get the printer protection counter (or waste-ink as it's sometimes called) reset.

2. Replace the waste ink pads OR redirect your waste ink flow to an external tank

It's important to note that Epson will encourage you to do a waste pad replacement through one of their service centers, but if you're out of warranty this will cost a significant amount of money (approx: $100 - 200)

To solve these as a DIY you can do the following:

1. Resetting the counter...
Get a resetter, either the SSC utility (google: epson SSC utility) or the IPR utility that Epson have now made available via their website here

The latter is only available to North American printer owners so the SSC is a safer bet.

2. Redirecting waste ink to an external container.
This is something I'd heartily recommend instead of trying to change the waste pads yourself... It's simple enough to do and a little googling using keywords "Epson R2400 waste ink tank" should get you all the info you need.

There are simple kits available that offer everything you need or you can easily go for a DIY with bits you have to hand.

Hope that helps...

Epson r 2400 top trashcan light and ink light flashing

For Jane106:
The ink-out and paper lights flashing alternately indicates the "service required" or basically ... "change my ruddy diaper, it's full of ink".

This is not as bad as it sounds and you have a few options:

1. Take it to a service center and have it serviced (ie: have the waste pads replaced)... It's expensive though so be warned.

2. Download the SSC utility (Google: SSC epson reset) and use this to reset the protection counter in the printer memory.
Note: READ the manual, it's not overly intuitive.

If you've gone with 2. you'll still need to do something about your waste ink and the simplest is really to modify your printer to redirect waste ink from the cleaning pump to an external tank.

Again Google is your friend so keywords like "Epson waste ink R2400" will find what you need. Some kits are better than others but then I'm biased :)

Hope that helps.

Resetting Counter Epson C66

If you are trying to reset the ink cartridge chip, you can't do it for this printer with the ssc utility - you need to get a chip resetting tool - these are very cheap to buy on e-bay.

If you are trying to reset the waste ink level, the counter you need to reset using the ssc utility is the "Protection Counter". Once you have reset this, turn the printer off and back on and it will be working again.

Epson Stylus photo 810/ink jet printer

Hi Alan

I expect by now you've solved this problem - but just in case .....

The waste ink "protection" counter has exceeded its limit and needs resetting. You can do this easily by using the SSC utility - download from:

Install it, and double click the ssc printer icon in the bottom right corner (System Tray). Choose Configuration and set your printer type (810), then close the ssc window. Now right click the ssc icon in the sytem tray and choose Protection Counter. You should see that the current count is above the limit; then choose reset to set it to zero. Turn the printer off then back on again. This will stop the lights flashing and restore normal operation.
