Hello, I have a 2000 VW passat with a Monsoon radio system. How do you install a new head unit and speakers while maintaining the factory amp? If this is impossible, Can I use the current speaker wires with a new amp? Also how do you connect 8 speakers to a 4 channel amp?

  • ctr1russo Apr 22, 2009

Thanks for the help. I am taking your advice and replacing the whole system. I read some nightmare stuff on VW Vortex too. So, I went out and bought an alpine 303 Head units, an Apline 4 channel Amp and some Alpine component speakers that are two speakers with only one speaker wire per door. Hence they are 4 channel to match the amp.
    Thanks again for your help
    Mike

Hello ctr1russo,
While it's not impossible to install a new head unit and speakers and leave the factory amp, it'll be a real bear of an install.
In order to work, the Monsoon amp needs 6v which is provided on the speaker leads. An aftermarket head unit will not provide that. Best to just install a new amp.
You should be able to use the wiring, including the speaker wiring, with no problems.
Check out www.bestkits.com for the appropriate adapters and wiring harness for Monsoon equipped vehicles. Just enter your vehicle info and it should bring up the required adapters and harnesses to make everything work properly.
There are three ways to connect more than one speaker to a single channel: 1) Parallel - both speaker +'s and -'s wired together - load impedance will be halved (2 4-ohm speakers in parallel equal a 2-ohm load). 2) Series - The + of one speaker wired to the - on the other speaker and the remaining + and - going to the channel output - load impedance will be doubled (2 4-ohm speakers wired in series equal an 8-ohm load). 3) Using a crossover - connect the bass speaker (woofer) and the input of a high-pass filter directly to the channel output and the treble (tweeter) speaker to the output side of the filter. In any of these connections, you want to make sure that the load (ohms) your amp "sees" is not less than it is rated for. Most amps will work into a 4-ohm or a 2-ohm load with no problems. Going below 2-ohms is bad, because it will cause the amp to overheat and possible fail. Going above 4-ohms is no problem for the amp, but it won't produce as much power (watts) at the higher impedance and your speakers will not be as loud as they could be.
Hope this helps. If it does, please rate as "FixYa:. Thanks!

How do i get my monsoon car stereo working again amp model # 2264744

I assume this is the one you put into your car (I answered the other question) if the radio anti theft is on you would need to get a dealer to run the serial number of the unit and get you the codes....assuming the previous didn't change it. You might come out cheaper changing the radio out with an aftermarket unit. Any unit can be used with the factory monsoon system. (I have done this in my 04 grand am monsoon). All you need is the radio of your choice and an installation kit and wiring harness adapter. You do not need the GM integration harness as long as you don't care about losing the door chime, key in ignituon chine, etc. You will need to run a switched ignition wire for the new radio as the factory one uses a data wire instead. It's just a matter of running a wire to a fuse in the drivers fuse box that comes on with the key. It's a rather easy installation and if you chose to have it done professionally should cost about $50 for labor.

How do I disconnect the amplifier on my 2005 Grand Prix; it makes continuous static noise whether the radio is on or off or whether the ignition is on or off?

Assuming it's the monsoon amplifier it's located under the rear deck about 8 inches away from the passenger rear speaker. However unplugging it will kill all the speakers. The only way to properly bypass it is to run all new wires.
You maybe able to find another factory amp at a salvage yard.

Warning: Most of the Monsoon head units have a 6V offset, making it incompatible with aftermarket amps.

Why are my speakers of my Monsoon radio making noise when ignition key is off?

Depending on the year of the car. The factory amp may be wearing out and need to be replaced.

How do I bypass the factory monsoon amp on a 2001 chevy camaro?

Every time I've done an install an a Monsoon system, I've run new speaker wires. It's the easiest way to bypass the amp because I don't believe there's anyway to integrate it. You should be able to locate the constant and ignition wires in the factory harness with a multimeter and tap into those.

Hope this helps

What kind of wire do I need to install Infinity reference series 605cs with a JL Audio 10" sub and a Alpine Flex 2 amp? Can I use my factory head unit?

You can use the factory speaker wiring for the Infinity speakers you should purchase a amp kit which will give you everything to install the amp. See site below

Well that all depends on the current audio system you have now is it just a basic or a premium factory system with a factory amp. Honestly you would get a better and cleaner sound if you change the factory head unit to a after market one which has preamp feeds and the higher the preout volt the better. Just make sure it is compatible with the amp volts input (Example 4v to 250mv) If you use the factory headunit you would have to by a high to preout adapter it connects to the exsiting radios speaker leads, but like I said before change the head unit you won't be sorry. Do not forget if you change the radio you need a radio install kit and the wiring harrness which converts the two radio plugs so you don't cut them so down the road you can remove the after market radio and just replug the factory right back in.

After Market radio install on a 2001 Passat

Metra makes a preamp harness that you can use if you have the partial Bose system. My A4 had that (where the front speakers were run off of the headunit with speaker-level feed, but the deck put a line level signal to a rear amp to power the speakers). This harness would let you use the aftermarket deck with your factory speakers, if you have the partial Bose system. Best bet is to do a Google search for "Metra 2001 Passat" or something like that and I'm sure it'll show up.
