Make sure that you dont have your audio muted. Go into your device manager and go to sounds and audio devices (xp; its different for vista). If everything is 'drayed out'... go into start/run/ [then type] msconfig Under the tab 'services' look for something that says sound or audio on the far left column. On the far right column make sure it says 'running' if it says 'stoped' thats your problem. If you cant find anything, go to hp.com and download updated drivers. NOW: I FOUND THE PROB USING WHAT YOU TOLD ME...BUT NOW WHAT...HOW DO I FIX THE PROBLEM...NOT VIEW IT...I NEED MY SOUND BACK :( IF YOU CAN HELP ME DO THAT, THATD BE GREAT...THANK YOU :)

I have the HP Pavilion Dv2000 Laptop- suddenly the sound stopped working through the in-built speakers but still outputs through the headphone jack. No sound outputs at all through the speakers- no windows prompts, iTunes, error beeps etc- deleted and re-installed the Conexant audio drivers ( 4 different versions) and even the generic Microsoft audio drivers- still no luck. Have gone as far as re-installing the OS from a fresh install and still no luck. The thing is the speakers emit sound when I load the BIOS settings and hit a key that produces an error sound- so they definitely still work! I'm at a loss- any help would be appreciated as I've tried everything I can think of- booting into safe mode, trawling through RegEdit files, un-installing media/torrent/music programs and codec packs to see if there was some conflict- and still no joy!

Go to www.hp.com and then support and download drivers. Put your model number in SEARCH box and a list of drivers for your model will show up. Select the audio driver and do a complete fresh install. That should solve your problem.

I tried so many other suggestions and this is the ONLY one that worked-my problem was solved in less than 3 minutes. Thank you

Check in BIOS to see if the audio device is disabled. Does the computer have a hardware switch for audio? If neither, then the device may be bad.

My laptop's sound is suddenly stopped

Right click on the my computer ICON and choose manage, then brose to device manager and see if the Sound device has a yellow ! over it if so right click on the device and choose update driver, and browse to you driver folder usually c:\ manufactors name \ Drivers\ Audio and then choose .inf file if you don't see one then see if it has a setup.exe and run it. Which should reinstall your sound driver.

AUDIO O/P SOUND CHANGED SUDDENLY

How about trying with its internal speakers ?
if it works fine then the sound output jack-port have a problem.
If not working then try to re-install your audio drivers.
If still not having good result even if you re-install your operating system, you should go to repair center since you have a hardware failure.
