Invalid media My new computer loads only to C:Windows/system/mup and freezes. Further checking reveals the message Invalid media reading C: I figured out that the partition table must be fouled. When I put in my Windows XP home disk it starts to load but I have no display. It seems to me that the display in Windows XP must be disabled somehow. Even my XP recover disk when it loads has no display as the screen stays grey. How can I format this drive to reinstall the XP? Or should I just get a new Hard drive and start over? The computer is 2 years old, 528mb ram, 80gb hard drive. Last scan with Norton Symantec showed no hard drive issues.

Hi,
Make sure your installation CD is ok by testing it in another system. You can use utilities in programs like Nero to scan the disk and make sure there are no read errors.

Let me know if this is of any use.

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} .. 0xc0000005

The first thing you should do is back up the HDD, Remove the HDD from your Laptop, you find the lid that opens the HDD access slot under the laptop or ask someone who knows how. if available there are aftermarket 2.5 HD enclosures that lets you install the 2.5 in.hdd of your laptop via a usb. you can plug the usb to a desktop PC and backup your files. then reformat your hdd. reinstall the hdd to your laptop. replace your memory ram which causes the blue screen with a new ram, reinstall the OS.

XP won't load onto hard drive.

Start the computer and press the f8 key as if to start in sage mode, but select the "Disable system reboot on error" (not sure of the exact wording on that). Then when the BSOD hits it will stay there so you can get the error number and message.

Alot of times these are memory errors so I would also suggest that you download a program called memtest 86. It is a small ISO file that will create a bootable cd to test the memory. You can get it from:

http://www.memtest86.com/download.html

Hope this helps

How can the product key be wrong??

I would be extremely surprised if this turned out to be a valid copy of XP. Shrink wrap is easy to do. Someone has already used your product key which Microsoft has now registered to a different computer.

And yes, when you submit it the message is that it is invalid which means already in use by another computer.

Microsoft never gives the error message "this product code is already in use". They only say it is invalid.

I've installed XP tons of time and even had a few times where the license belonged to another computer. When that happened, the invalid error message is what I got.

I'll make another guess and say you did not buy XP from a computer store, but instead from an individual. A reputable computer store should be able to help you with your problem if you bought from one.

Video Drivers

The file “Windows/System/Drivers/mup.sys” is not actually causing the problem. It’s the next step after mup.sys that’s causing the computer to hang. That next step consists of the OS checking the registry files for plug and play devices.
Some causes are: new or defective hardware installed, corrupted registry, (caused by virus), defective or corrupted hard drive, just to name a few.
Try removing all devices attached to the computer like printer, web cam, flash drives, etc.
If your computer has a PCI or AGP graphics card AND your motherbrd has a VGA connector, remove the video card and use the one on the motherbrd.
If the above doesn’t work, try running “CHKDSK /P” from the Windows recovery console.

Can u help me?

You may insert the Windows XP CD and reinstall Windows XP just to be sure. Follow the instructions on your screen and format the C Drive. Make sure you install all the required drivers to make everything work.

If you are optimistic follow the following instructions:
This will help you attempt to repair your system (and not via the Recovery Console).
Insert the Windows XP CD and follow the instructions on your screen.
Then after a certain point, you will be asked for three options --
1. Install Windows
2. Repair via Recovery Console
3. Some other option I don't recall.

Select the first option.
Then again, follow the instructions on your screen and again the computer will ask you three options.
This time select the second one -- Attempt to repair the computer (Press R).

This should start the automated repair process. This has been observed to work most of the time, but in a few rare cases it doesn't work. So I suggest you try it if you have the patience. ;-)

Good Luck.
