I have a cybershot DSC W55. When the power button is switched on the
lens extends and the "access" message shown on screen. Also amber light
is flashing above screen. After a few seconds I get a message to power
on and off again. I\'ve tried switching on and off a few times,
removing battery pack and memory card, but nothing seems to be solving
the problem.

Remove the Battery from the Camera and clean the battery compartment using a soft cloth. Then, press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. Then, reinsert the Battery pack and turn ON the Camera. Please make sure that the Battery is fully charged. If the issue persists then the issue may be related to mechanical failure and service will be required.
I fixed this issue with my Sony Cybershot by gently (carefully) hitting the camera 3 times against a carpeted bench with the lens retracted and the camera turned off. It seems the lens gears were stuck. Now the camera works fine again.
mine does the same thing. i just bought it like 2 months ago too. what could it be? i don't want to have to ship it back, but it looks that way so far. i bought new batts. too and that did nothing. also i called sony, and spoke w/ tech support, and they had me take out the batteries, hold down the power button for 30 secs and then put the batts. back in. ??? i was like what will that do and she said reset it, but it still won't power on and the lens is out. it beeps like duhduh and then goes back off. it is making me mad. b/c also i have bought 2 sony PS2's and they both quit reading games. what is with sony? can someone help us w/ the camera problem? thanks!
I have to agree with one of the comments previously posted. I too had a Sony DCS-S700 and the lens was stuck open. Whenever I turned the camera on, the Sony Cybershot logo appeared and dissappeared, turning the camera off. I noticed the lens was crooked, so I moved it in the center direction and the camera worked again.
