I have a Sanyo PLC xu38 projector broken receptical.

There's no test equipment for DLP lamps.
The only way to test the lamp is with a working projector.
I am a Tech many times, I can tell by a visual inspection.

If you purchased a cheap lamp, or from someone beside a Sanyo dealer then, you may have a bad lamp.

check the vga connections or toggle the fn+ what ever f key on that make of laptop.
check the projector is set on computer mode

if it's warped from heat or broken, replace it.

It is printed on the side of the box that the projector came in or there is a label on the bottom of the projector. It is near the bottom of the label, and it reads "Serial No." This should take care of finding it unless the box is thrown away and someone has peeled the label off.
