I have tried everything to try and get my local disk (D:) but without any success. Would it be because I have now a new computer ? Or is it that the technician who transfered everything from my old computer to this one did not do something necessary ? Please help because I had all my photo folders in My local disk (D:) and now I am missing them.

I have a WD MyBook external hard drive. Have all my old PC data on it and was using it with minimal problems for the last 8-9 months, now all of a sudden "access denied" I've tried several suggestions online in regards to permissions and ownership etc...nothing has worked. It still shows up in "my computer" and properties claim "device is working properly" yet I can no longer access my much needed files.

This occurs when the drive was taken from a PC where someone made the drive un-shareable.
The fix in XP:
1. Turn off Simple File Sharing, via Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, (NOT) use Simple File Sharing.
2. Now when you right click the drive letter for the drive on the new PC you will see a Security tab (made invisible by Simple File Sharing).
3. On the Security Tab, add yourself or any user, and grant Full Permission.
4. Now you can Explore the drive like any other.

Solved !
The problem IS, after all, 'Permissions'.
Permissions need to be set, not only under 'Sharing', but more importantly, 'Security' / 'Advanced'.
On the system that your MyBook was originally installed on, right-click the folder on the drive which you wish to permit access to from other systems, select 'Security' and select 'Advanced'.
Create a new user 'Everyone' and give 'Full Control' to this new user.
The drive will then be available on other systems as mine now is.
Phew!

You may have to go to Start/Run and type chkdsk D: /R and press enter then type a Y to unmount the drive. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.

Yes I have the same problem: "access is denied" when i try to delete or move or do anything in local disk D. I just installed windows again and forgot to format it. Earlier solutions could be helpful but when i open a files properties, there are only general, sharing and customize. No security. I'm administrator so what the ****? Also "1. Turn off Simple File Sharing, via Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, (NOT) use Simple File Sharing." that one is missing. No "use simple file sharing".

Hi, everyone I have a Solution for the any HDD drive not accessable. Any problem can be solved only when you also face that same problem in life. I also face this problem with myself. I have 2 hdd on my pc one is Hitachi serial 80gb and other is Maxtor sata 250gb.I have Windows Xp Sp3 on C:/ drive and Total drive from C:/ to J:/.C,E,F,G are my hitachi and D,H,I,J are my sata drives. One day due i was working on my pc and suddenly power went down and my Ups also didn't give the backup on that day. When Power came back i was totally shocked to se my 3 drives H,I and J are not accessable. All 3 are showed raw in their properties. These 3 drive are of my sata. And then i installed windows 7 Ultimate in my d drive that is also of my sata. After login in windows 7 my all drives are working fine but everytime on boot from any windows of mine these 3 drive are checked by chkdsk on everyboot. I can see all my drives in windows 7 but not in XP SP3. Then i login from windows 7 and attach a external drive of 160Gb in it i start transffering data from H,I, and J drive one by one. Then i formatting the all 3 Drives H,I,J one by one. After it I again tranfer all drives respective data to them and thats it. It starts working fine on both windows and now the error of disk check by chkdsk on boot also disappear. Now my whole data works fine and my Hdd are also fine. This method works for me. If anyone get it helpful or wants to talk further about it contact me on my mail EJAZ89(@LIVE.COM. Because i'm not a regular user of this website.

As solution #9 stipulates it has everything to do with rights. I too had the problem, and I just went to Security/advanced and added the current user and gave full control. After adding this security setting my drive was accessible again.

A corrupt or missing boot sector will cause such kind of problem with the following indicates:

*Invalid media type reading drive.

*Abort, Retry, Fail?

*File system is displayed as "RAW".

*Windows may ask if you want to format the drive, such as warning "disk not formatted. Do you want to format now?"

*File names contain "weird" characters.

"Sector not found" messages.

To fix the boot sector, you may refer to
http://www.ptdd.com/fixboot.htm

If it still cannot be solved, you have to recover all the data out and then format the partition as the system indicates so that you can enter the partition again.

Still having the same problem!!----------
I have tried all of this and just can't get it...either I am doing it wrong and its not working???I went through the security tabs making sure it was set to give me permission. even added another user and gave them permission, it starts going through the mybook files and then stops because it ran into a problem, forcing me to cancel.
if I start up in safe mode, its there and I can get into it...so that tells me that ITS THERE. there is one folder missing. Its my picture folder. but judging by the amount of space that it says I have left on the drive, I'd say that its still there, just didn't load up in safe mode for some reason. I don't know what else to do. thanks, shirley

Ok here's the best solution to solving biggest problem with maxtor hard disks.... there 's nothing u can do about it so get a friends hard drive equivalent or more to the space of your hard drive(empty) and then use the easeus software to recover all files from it and then format the hard disk all over. its pretty simple and it worked for me!!!

You must check your account if you are admistrator
try on :c right click, than click properties, than click above on
security than check for any change you may had made recently
on the account access, put the admistrator account back again
and any other users that you might had changed recently,or
made them off the account.
I had that problem and it was because of puting off an administrator account and the users of it.

This error appears when attempting to access the Shared Documents folder (which appears to be renamed to “Documents”)

I recently had this problem on the main computer here at my home. This same problem prevented Adobe Acrobat 6.0 from working, and prevented a reinstall (or uninstall and install), as well.
I’ve finally found a fix. And it’s quite a simple one. Follow these steps.
1. Choose Start > Run, type %allusersprofile% in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click the Documents folder, and choose Properties.
3. Click the Sharing tab, and then unselect “Share This Folder on network” if it is selected. If it’s not selected, select it.
4. Apply. If you had to unselect the box in step 3, now select it again and Apply.
This causes the name of the folder to change to Shared Folder.

To fix this i just right clicked my laptops main hard drive, clicked the properties option, then clicked the security tab (moved that window to the side)
(Went back to my computer)
Then I right clicked the External Hard Drive, clicked the properties option then clicked the security tab and made sure everything was mirrored (the same) and the boxes check were all the same.

It worked for me although every time i clicked a folder in my external it said i did not have permissions but to click "continue" and i would have them from now on. Did have an issue when i right clicked the external drive a window would pop up saying my Recycle Bin in F:\ was corrupt and if i wanted to empty it. I just click no every time.

The hard disk in drive D: is not accessible

I recently had this problem. Whenever I clicked on any of the drives a window appeared with warning which said drive not accessible. Access is denied. Previously I thought that it is a virus which has edited my registry and is not allowing me to enter or even view my content. So I formatted the whole system but that didn't help. Now I am sharing this with you.
  1. Open My Computer. Goto Tools>Options. Goto View Tab Pane. Uncheck the last Option in the Advanced Setting which says Use simple file sharing(Recommended). Apply the setting.
  2. Open the properties window of the drive you are unable to access.Goto Security tab pane.
  3. Goto Advanced.
  4. Now click on the Owner tab pane.
  5. It's very rare that the ownership of the drive changes. But it happens once in a while.
  6. So if you are the user say Admin then select Admin(ComputerName\Administrator).
  7. Click on the box which says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click over Ok.
  8. Apply the changes.
  9. Now you should be able to access the drive.

Access denied

Using Admin logon, open mmc and go to disk management.
Right click on C: drive and click "Properties", select "security" tab and click "advanced" button, select "owner" tab.
Choose new owner and check the "replace owner" check box and "apply".

The hard disk in drive D: is not accessible

Well this message can be two things(if not more) One of them being that the disk has security set and you wil need to change those settings if you want access to the drive the other scenario being that a program has locked the disk for exclusive access. Assuming you are using Windows XP. To check the security go to the properties of the disk then click on security(Tf the security tab isn't there, Open my computer then click Tools->Folder Options then the View Tab. Scroll to the bottom/last option then uncheck Use Simple File-Sharing press OK/Apply) Now back to Properties of the disk then Click the security tab. You'll need to try this first and tell me what's there, or if u got any error message etc. My explanation might be to long if i try to explain every possibility. regards, babb
