When I switch on machine and press 'open' button, 'open' is displayed and I hear the door opening motor operating for a few seconds as usual but door does not open. If I assist firmly by holding and pulling the door cover it will open. Once I have done this everything works normally and the door will open and close until I switch the machine off. Same problem occurs each time I switch the machine on. I have a manual, some tools and basic skills. What do I do please?

It's a simple job for a repairer - if you can find one that will have anything to do with audio cassette technology anymore, sorry, but I'm finding that some won't.
Not knowing where you are I don't know which currency you use but if it helps, here in the UK I'd say don't spend more than £25 on this.
There are still new cassette decks made and lots of good used ones around.
I know Technics is a very good make but I was looking at superb condition Nakamichis the other week for £35 which are a far better brand.

I'm not familliar with this device but from the ERROR it spits out you seam to have a configuration problem, since it is a TAPE wich is 44 Khz SAMPLE RATE, check the sampling rate settings it might be to high or to low
Hope this helps!

i had the same problem of not opening the cassette doors and not running with my sony tc wr535. After I repaced the belts myself with new ones it did run fine! :-) An original sony(!) rubber belt set for the two decks costed me 23 euroos incl pp.
