How to fax. do i have to be plugged in to phone jack etc

if you want the fax to go to the telephone number of the target receiving fax machine it will need a working phone line to be connected to your fax machine. If the device of unknown model number and make is a multi function printer / fax/ copier / scanner it will require a phone cable from the device to the wall socket.
The user manual of the mystery device may explain the type of phone cable to use and where it plugs into the device.

We cannot recieve or send faxes

Make sure that the printer is connected to an active phone line and the phone cable is connected to the correct port. If it's plugged in straight to the wall jack, the cable should be connected to the line port.

Please check the User's Guide for your printer on how to properly setup your fax: http://images.lexmark.com/publications/pdfs/2007/x26x-x36x/html/en/index.html

Connecting my HP Officejet 4315v All-in-One Printer.Fax.Scanner.Copier with a phone modem in order to use the fax machine

The power cable goes in the socket on the far left. The phone line goes into the port named 1-LINE and runs to the wall. 2-EXT is for you to connect you phone or fax machine if you so wish.

If it is your first time installing the printer I would take a moment to go through the setup as mentioned in the manual here. It seem the USB port should be connected at a specific point during installation.

Hope this helps.

Before I moved, my Lexmark all-in-one printer worked perfectly, but after I moved, everything worked EXCEPT printing of an incoming fax. Everything sounds the same through the sounds the telephone makes as...

Please go through the following checklist:
  • Make sure to plug the telephone fax line from the phone jack in the wall to the Line port on the back of your printer. For more info, please refer to the Lexmark X125 User's Guide.
  • If you have an answering machine connected to the same fax line, be sure to configure it so that it answers first before the fax machine (e.g. if your answering machine picks up on the 3rd ring, set your fax to pick up on the 6th ring or more)
  • If the line has a voicemail feature, disable it or request for a distinctive ring from your phone company.

I have an HP 2510 printer. I cannot use it to fax because once I plug the phone jack into the printer I get a busy signal. If I plug the jack into a phone, it works fine. How do I get the printer to...

Hi irwinbadin,

HP fax products are designed so that other telephone equipment can be connected on the same line as the fax. The unit must be connected first using a two-conductor fax/phone cable like the one that shipped with the HP product. Using a four-conductor telephone cable may cause problems receiving faxes or calls.

There are two different types of phone cables. There are two-conductor phone cables like what originally shipped with the HP fax product and there are four-conductor cables. HP fax products are designed to work with a two-conductor phone cable. Look at the end of the cable and verify that it has only two copper leads or wires. Replace any four-conductor cables with a two-conductor cable. Only two-conductor phone cables should be used to connect the all-in-one to the phone line.

Figure 1: The difference between a two-conductor phone cable and a four-conductor phone cable

Step one: Connect the phone line to the fax
The fax will have two or three sockets (or jacks) for phone lines. Some of these may have a removable plastic plug in them. These sockets will be labeled with text, To Wall Jack , or with a graphic of the wall jack. See Figure 1 below.

Plug the two-conductor telephone cable that came with the HP product into the telephone wall jack. Then, plug it into this socket as shown below.

In areas with above ground telephone lines and electrical storms (lightning), it is a good idea to purchase a telephone line surge suppressor and connect it between the telephone wall jack and the fax. This will help prevent damage to the fax from a lightning-caused power surge on the phone line.

Step two: Add other phone-line devices
To connect other telephone devices, use the other socket (or sockets) on the fax. These are identified by text or with a graphic of a telephone and/or computer.

Connect a caller ID unit between the fax and the telephone.
Use the information below that matches the devices you need to connect.

Fax and telephone
Connect a single-line telephone to one of the added sockets on the fax. The telephone will share the same phone line as the fax. See the illustration below.

Fax, answering machine, and telephone
When a telephone answering machine and telephone are connected, connect the answering machine to the fax and then connect the telephone to the answering machine as shown below.

Fax and computer modem
To use a fax and a computer modem on the same phone line, connect the fax to the computer modem. The modem socket on the computer may be labeled Line or Wall jack .

reyjoshua07_9.jpg

Fax, computer modem, and telephone
To use a computer modem and a telephone with the fax, connect the computer modem to the fax. Then, connect the telephone into the second phone line connector on the computer modem or the third fax socket (if it is available). The image below shows how to connect a computer and a telephone to a fax with two sockets.

reyjoshua07_10.jpg

Fax, modem, answering machine, and telephone
The image below shows how to connect a computer modem, answering machine, and telephone to a fax. Connect the computer modem to the fax, then connect the answering machine to the computer, and finally, connect the telephone to the answering machine.
If the fax has three phone line sockets instead of two, some of the devices can be connected to the other phone socket on the fax.

I have a fax number but dont know how to connect

Do you have separate phone lines for fax and phone?
If so, connect it to the fax socket (like the telephone socket) on the wall.
Use the menu button to setup the date, time, your fax number etc.Faxes can be sent even if you don't do this, but the details printed on the receivers copy will show wrong date, wrong time and wrong fax number

If you have only one line for phone and fax, you may have to select the one of the options preferably phone/fax, connect it to the wall socket as you would connect a telephone
  • Phone only
  • fax only
  • fax/phone
Read your manual for for other fax report and so on.

I am trying to use the fax facility on my epson600fw.my isp is aol .Problem no dial tone. What connections are necessary............via printer, modem & computer ?

Typically, a fax machine is connected directly to a telephone wall jack with a known working connection. Try plugging the fax machine directly into a wall jack first and pick up the handset on the fax machine if it has one. You should get a dial tone. Then try to fax something to someone you know.

The machine can also usually be routed through the modem in a computer by connecting the "line" cord on the modem to the wall jack and plugging the fax machine into the the "phone" jack on the modem. You may need to install the software that came with the fax machine to get this to work.

If you have no dial tone, check the wall jack with a known to be working single line phone. If there is a dial tone, it's something to do with fax machine, the computer modem or the connections.

Some fax machines can take advantage of internet faxing through a cable modem or DSL connection. Check your manual for the options available.

Must have DSL filter attached before fax, not sure how you are saying you have it setup, but phone line should come from wall then to filter then to fax socket marked line, phone should be hooked to socket on fax marked EXT, if you dont have dedicated fax line then fax number will be same as phone no.

If you have Adsl then there will be a lead from wall that splits into two, one goes to your modem (ADSL) and the other marke phone or line needs to go to fax socket marked LINE
