Question about JVC GR-D290 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Flickering image/brightness up and down

Hi, I have a GR-D290 camcorder of about 3 years old. Last week it has developed some kind of fault where the image won't settle on its brightness (if that makes sense). It flickers dark and bright, usually in bright conditions. Sometimes it works fine in low light but as soon as i point it at something bright it starts again. Other times I turn it on and the picture is very dark and won't react when pointed at anything. Once or twice it said remove lens cap but not every time. I know JVC are doing free repairs on some models for similar problems but my camera isn't one of the listed eligible models. Is this a CCD fault and if so, any ideas what it might cost to repair or if it can be done easily? Thanks

Also, this camera is very noisy when switched on. I've been told that motor noise is unavoidable with tape based cameras but it gets on all the recordings. Is there a way to quiet it down or could it be a fault?

This is a CCD problem (I deal with it every day!). Take the camera to a JVC authorized service along with the purchase documents! You might get it replaced for free or a small fee.

The Iris in the optical block is stuck. Need new optical block. Temp fix turn unit upside down and tap bottom this will loosen the iris for a little time.

When in video recording mode LCD screen and viewfinder are black when the lens cap is off.

It could one of a few problems:

1. The viewfinder is pulled out and "PRIORITY" is set to "FINDER".

Push the viewfinder back in or set "PRIORITY" to "LCD".

2. The LCD monitor's brightness setting is too dark.

Adjust the brightness of the LCD monitor.

3. If the monitor is tilted upward 180 degrees, open the monitor fully.

My JVC GR - D290 says that the lens cap is on when the lens cap is off

Open and close it a few times. Maybe tap the side a little bit as the lens cap switch may be sticking.

How do i get moving images from my GR-D290 to my PC? I can watch them on my camcorder but would like to get them loaded to my PC so that I put them on a DVD. And so that I can record new events

Use Firewire cable connected to firewire port of Your computer. Even Windows movie maker can capture images from any DV camcorder. After capture it´s easy to burn DVD with any burning software. For more questions email me.
Good luck!

No spare and no repair now you have opened it. Water damage is likely to have done more than you describe any way.

Jvc GR-D290

Hi, Since videos are taped in DV format, you need a firewire card (IEEE-1394) and cable. These are cheap. May be your PC already has a firewire card. Just check. Windows XP recognises automatically the camcorder. Moreover, its integrated video capture/editing module, Windows Movie Maker, is very userfriendly. USB connection is only good for downloading still images (photos) to your PC. For more information, go to http://www.videohelp.com/. good luck
