I also had this problem. I removed side panels and found that on the left side there is a template on one of the gears that is read by an optical switch. The part on mine where there is a black box printed on the template to block switch had worn through the printing, filled in with permanent marker and problem went away

I have 2 of these and they have exactly the same problem

I have the same problem with my HP C4180 all in one printer. I get a paper jam error message and there is no paper in the printer. I had this error with a previous C4180 and HP Tech Support couldn't figure the error out over the phone after 2 days so they sent me another refurbished C4180 printer in August 2007 that gave me the same message after using a few times. Fustrated I didn't feel like spending another 2 days on the phone troubleshooting again and now I called HP tech support and they said it's out of it's 90 day replacement warranty. Basically I'm on my own. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to fix this problem? Thanks in advanced for all your help!

Same problem here and the reset instructions from HP do not work!!!!

  • Anonymous May 02, 2008

Yes, I have the same problem! Thanks for all the comments, I will try them. Let me know if you have any more solutions. I have 2 of these printers, one is working one is not due to a false paper jam. They do make very good phots prints when they work. That is why I bought another one, thinking it would be cheaper to just buy another than to fix the broken one.

I have the HP PhotoSmart C4180 All-in-One as well and I have the same problem. The page will print a quarter of the way out and then stop, saying there is a paper jam. After the page is out the printer still says there is a problem. After investigating inside of the printer I still have yet to find any kind of jam whatsoever.

Had the same paper jam problem. Opened the LHS panel what Mitryp had suggested but just with a light push of the clear wheel back to its place and it worked perfectly. No glue was applied. Make sure you don't mess with the sensa.
(See best solution above for detail on how to open the LHS panel)

I bought one of these with the same problem from EBAY, take the printer apart and on the end of the paper feed roller/ shaft, there is a clear plastic disc with holes around the outside.
This is meant to spin with the shaft, on mine it had popped off the end of the shaft, so I pushed it back on and it worked!!
Just splodge a bit of superglue or whatever to keep it in place and away you go!!!
Simple.......
Oh, but I seem to remember you need TORX bits for the screws.
Good luck.

If the paper jam error message is appearing without paper (stuck or otherwise) in the machine, you may be experiencing a ?False? paper jam. Perform a test page without paper in the machine. Press the OK and Help keys at the same time to print an internal test page. After doing the key press, the machine should prompt you to put paper in with the ?Out of Paper ? error message. If the machine doesn?t display this, but displays ?Paper Jam ?, then you are seeing a ?False? paper jam. If this occurs, proceed to the following steps - Perform a reset on the unit by following the steps below: Make sure that the unit is on, and unplug the power cord from the back of the unit. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. On the unit keypad press the OK and the Help keys simultaneously and hold both keys down while plugging in the power cord. The Semi-full Reset message will appear on the unit display. Wait until the unit initialization process is complete. The unit will have recovered its original settings. If you have completed all of the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service your product.

I had the same issue and just like some of the others mentioned, I removed the left hand side panel and removed the two hex bolts. There was a white gear with a plastic covering over it that had backed off the shaft. I simply pushed the gear back down so that it was interlocked with the other gear and it's working fine again. It's not even as noisy as it had become. I guess this was a sign that something was going wrong.

Did the same solution of removing the left side panel, but connect/disconnect the 2 cables (one black/red and the other gray - you have to use your left hand to unplug'em) on the back of the 3 flat light-gray multi-cables. And it worked perfectly

This is my 3rd printer ( previous 2 were under warranty) with the same fault - false paper jam error. I tried the reset option , also checked for loose cog & template rubbed off & unfortunately non of these seemed to be the problem. I disconnected the power & pc supply & took the LHS panel off by pressing down the retaining clips ( top & bottom) & then removing the side panel by unscrewing the 2 star headed screws. I carefully pulled out the 3off multi strand cables from their sockets & pushed them back in again. Reassembled the printer & it seems to be working. Hope this helps

Take and axe to it. I've had two and they've both had the same problem.

My hp photosmart printer is saying Error carriage jam, open dorr clear carriage jam and then press Ok to continue. Which door should I open and how do I clear the carriage jam? Linda

Without any paper in the machine I would try powering off and powering on. Lifting the scanner lid will clear so the carrige goes back to the correct side of the printer. Even rebooting the printer and loading the software will sometimes cause the carriage to go back to where it was supposed to be.

PAPER JAM WITH NO PAPER

This may be caused by a dirty sensor. Disconnect power supply, open the printer and clean everything. You may use toilet paper. Be careful not to leave fragments of toilet paper inside the printer.

How to take apart HP C4180 All-in-one

After talking to HP tech support and tring all the textbook fixes for my false paper jam,I think i have found the problem,at least mine works like new again!!!!! Take the left and right side covers off,,,,make sure your unplugged! On the right side off your ink tray is a small box with a lens on the bottom make sure that is clean..... On the left side you see a few large gears,,,on one near the center is a clear disc with numbers on it,,,,,,turn the gear closest to the corner back and forth,,,,clear plastic disc should turn also,,,,if it does not,,,gently turn it with your finger tip,, it should tighten up... Line it up so black sqare is at the bottom,,,,,slide ink tray to center position,,, restart printer,,,good luck
