TV will not turn on...

I just tried to turn my Akai PTH5498 on and you can hear the TV begin to turn on and then the timer light blinks. Nothing else. Then the timer light stops blinking and goes off. I have tried unplugging everything including the surround sound and cable and TV and plugging them all back in but the TV is still not turning on. Can you help?

I was having the same problem, press the power button on the remote and the tv would click and the red light would come on and flash a few times then nothing. I was about ready to take it in for service when I picked up a universal remote pressed the tv and power button and it came on. after it was on I could use the original remote to operate the tv controls and turn it off but it wouldn't turn it on for some strange reason. don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a shot before a $300 service call

Can you add more detail to what's happening? Are there any sound coming from behind the set? Do the lights in your home dim as it is cycling on and off? Is there a squealing from behind/inside the set? Was there any repairs or problems prior to this? I ask these questions because I have the same set, and experienced the same trouble. Eventually the cycling stopped and the set began to come on. Then it would start cycling again. Finally the cycling stopped the set came back on, but now the sound doesn't work. I can only hear the sound using my surround system. I currently have parts on order and I'll keep you posted on the out come. My email is [email protected] for you or anyone else who can shed light on our problem here. If your set is making the squealing sound like a mouse during the cycling process. I believe it is coming from one or both of the large 2200 micro farad capicitors located on the the right power board. They are the largest ones on the board. DO NOT TOUCH THIS AREA UNTIL THE CAPICITORS HAVE BEEN DISCHARGED!!!! THEY CAN KILL!!!! There is also a small black relay clicking on the center convergence board. My problem started about 2 months after I made a repair to the convergence board-swapping out the 2 convergence ICs STK392-040 as well as the blown pico fuses. The convergence seemed to work fine, All color was back to normal after performing the convergence a couple times, but after 2 months this cycling problem started. Any help will be greatly appreciated from anyone. I will keep you posted on my progress.

I have the pth5498 and my tv won't turn on. My

Timer is not the problem---the tick ticking sound is the shutdown circuit in the set that has been triggered by a short somewhere likely in the high voltage area or the convergence circuit---shop repair---says Akai but I suspect set was made by Samsung who owned that name at one time.

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.

A lot of people on this site have this problem, including me. Usually a problem in the convergence board, requiring fixing (not expensive, really) or replacement (about $80 DIY). In my case it was a coolant leak.

DOES THE TV SEEM TO BE CYCLING ON AND OFF, BUT NEVER COMES ON? WHAT I MEAN IS DOES IT SEEM TO BE TRYING TO COME ON, BUT SHUTS DOWN IMMEDIATELY CONTINUOSLY AND WILL ONLY STOP CYCLING THIS WAY UNTIL IT'S UNPLUGGED? DOES IT MAKE A SQUEAKING SOUND FROM BEHIND THE SET WHILE THIS IS HAPPENING?
