HP DeskJet 5550--not printing

I replaced my black ink cartridge; printed out a couple of documents and now a few days later nothing will print. There are no error messages or anything unusual. The printer acts like it's printing, but the pages come out blank. I do have 2 pre-school aged kids which occasionally get into things....could they have done something to cause this or is the printer just dead? It's 4 years old.

I'm having the same problem with my HP DeskJet 5550. The strange thing is, this problem also happened with my last printer, which was about 10 years old. I thought it was the printer, so I replaced it with this 5550, only to have the same problem with blank pages. Can anyone help?

I have tried resetting it, turning the printer off and turning it back on, unplugging it and plugging it back in, etc. The low ink light is on and it won't do anything.

my printer was working fine. I changed the black printer cartridge and now it won't print. It acts as if it is going to print but it spits out blank pages. It will print out a test page though. something is weird here.

Did you ever get it to work? I'm having the same problem.

I replaced the black ink cartridge. It printed a few documents just fine, Then it printed a few pages with very incomplete print. At one time it printed one partial line, a title, and then it advanced about one third of the paper, stopped, rolled the paper back a little and stopped altogether. I have tried turning off the computer and unplugging the printer, letting it rest a few minutes, then turning on the computer and plugging the printer back in.

I, too, replaced the black ink cartridge. Printer will print out test page fine. When I try to print anything else it prints bars or "mush" where the words should be.

I've reloaded the cartridges and software, unplugged everything, checked the driver, etc. and nothing seems to help.

I also have the same problem reported here: I changed black cartridge and now get partial prints, sometimes though it will print. I brought a new genuine HP ink cartridge, reloaded drivers, reset cable, even cleaned cartridge case with alcohol-moistened q-tip. Nada. Yet it will sometimes print a full page of text with no problem.

HP web page is of no good use, its there to sell, is all.

One line will print the next line will be smeared or won't print anything. Pictures print fine, text is strange. Replaced black ink still no change.

I'm a novice to this printer and can't figure out where or how to feed paper in to have it copied. I press start and it goes the motions of printing, doesn't grab the paper to be copied, and just prints out a sheet with HP on it.

where do I feed in the original to printed in color?

Hurray! Alleluya! I read the book! HP5550 supports USB connection, went and bought a USB 2.0 cable for $15.27+tax at local Wal-Mart, reinstalled printer software as directed, and voila! It prints fine again. I had forgotten that only reason I was using serial port was because I bought this printer when I still had my trsty IBM Aptiva, which of course did not speak USB.

Try to re-insert the cartridge on the carriage cause maybe it doesnt mesh proper with the printhead anymore.

Hi, This could be Low-Ink or paper Jam. Try turning off The printer, Unplug from The Mains Electric, for 3-5 Minutes. Turn back On, if Lights Are Still There. Check The Ink-Levels. And Replace Cartridges, if necessary.

If the Cartridge and printer alignment is successfull and you are still not able to print in color, mostly the Color print is disabled in your pc

Click on START Button
Open Printers and Faxes folder
Highlight the Printer icon for Deskjet
Right click on the printer icon and choose Printing Preferences
Under Printing preferences, you will find Printing mode - It must be on BLACK or GREY SCALE, Change to COLOR/ ALL
try printing.

The colour ink is not printing properly on my hp deskjet 5550 printer and I can't find how to do a clean

Hi there,
  1. Click Start , click All Programs , click Hewlett-Packard , and then click Printer Assistant .
  2. Click Utilities .
  3. Click View ink levels .
    • If a cartridge is low on ink, discontinue these steps, replace the cartridge, and then try printing again.
    • If the cartridges contain a sufficient amount of ink, continue to the next step.
  4. Click Printer Maintenance .
  5. Click Clean Cartridges .
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
PLease note the if you do not take prints regularly there are chances that the ink has dried up in that case refill or replace the cartridge.

Hope this helps. Please rate my response.
HAve a good day.

Printer has been idle for several weeks. When I came to use it the printing is broken and faded looking. How do I clean the cartridges?

HP Deskjet 5550 Printer.

The deskjet printers should not be kept idle.

At least once in two or three days, you can take one page print out.

This has to be done, otherwise, the inks both Black and colour will get frozened and sometimes it will become dry at the catridge mouth.

Black Ink is 56 and Colour is 57.

Solution :

01. Manually remove both catridges from the printer carefully.

02. Shake the catridges with full force pointing towards ground. You can find out now, that ink is coming out from the catridges which was frozen or dried up.

03. Clean the cartridge drive with a nice cloth and cleaning liquid.

04. Re install both catridges and take a test print out.

05. Recommended to have a service contract with local HP Authroized printer vendor to have a regular maintenance at least once in a month.

Won't print

The print cartridges might need cleaning.

Both ink cartridges?

Both have to be in the printer, even if one is empty.
