StorageTek L40- Service required Led Blinking always.
I have a StorageTek L40 tape library with two LTO2 drives. The service required LED is blinking always in the library.
Now its detached from the server. Once its connected with the server the server gets crashed.
I have removed the all the cables (except power cable) and powered On. But still its states that service required...
I couldn't find whats the problem exactly..
Please help me to resolve this issue.
Thanks and regards,
Re: StorageTek L40- Service required Led Blinking always.
Remove the server connection from the library.
power on the library, follow the display in the front panel. The library will do some checks. Note where it fails. Press the select button, it will display the some code message. With the error code refer the manual.

Are you seeing a cleaning light or is it just ejecting the tapes? If it is ejecting them then make sure to try a brand new tape of the right type (if it is the wrong tape type it will eject). Also try a cleaning tape if the cleaning light is on. If that does not work then you will need to send in the tape drive somewhere for repair as the head might be worn out or the drive needs a good service. Try going to http://tape-drive-repair.com who sell and repair these units. The LTO2 and LTO3 drives are pretty inexpensive now and so this should be fairly cheap to have sorted. Also this unit is the same as the Quantum superloader3 so that might help if you are still googling for a solution
Do Not clean the tape drives in a HP tape library unless and until the cleaning LED blinks. It is strictly recommended by HP.
Also do not fill all the slots with media, always leave 2 slots free apart from the male slots. This helps to avoid media struck in the library.
I had the same problem with our Storagetek L40 library and had to get another robotic hand from a company named Instock Inc. It was an easy fix. I just had to power off the L40 library, take off the old hand and put the new hand on, then turned the L40 library back on, and it worked great after that. In the hand is a sensor that goes bad after time.
You should be able to find them on the web at instockinc.com I believe, and they should have the hand you would need.
We have the same problem with our ADIC Scalar 24. The only way we have been able to eject the tape is to cycle power on the tape library and after it has finished reading the tape barcodes, we can use the front panel command to unmount the tape that is in the drive. We haven't been able to find a solution to the problem and it happens at least once a week
