I own a 18-year-old Kenmore front-load washer so I'm not sure this will apply, but here goes... My washer requires me to press and HOLD the start button for a few seconds before it will start. At that point the door will lock and the washer goes through its startup phase. I think that is a "safety feature' to keep from accidentally bumping the button and starting the washer. See if that help. Good luck!

Sometimes I just have to unplug the machine, wait a few seconds and plug it back in and it works. I guess it resets itself or something.

Disconnect the power cord, PLEASE. Remove the kick plate on the bottom front by removing the 3 screws below it. You will need a hex socket and extension or a torx screw driver. If there is water in the machine and it will not drain you will need a shop vac and some old towels to catch the water when you open the filter. Now, you will see the filter in front of you. Have the towels ready and vac turned on. Quickly unscrew the filter cap and stick the vac hose right in the filter to catch the water. Clean the filter cap. Did you find any socks, money or other debris? If yes that may have been your problem. Put the filter back on and HAND tighten well. Test the machine. From now on empty all pockets before you do the laundry

The problem might be that the black pin (about 3/8" long and 1/8" in diameter), that normally sticks out of the frame of the washer at about the 2 o'clock position, and which is pushed in when the door closes, has broken off. If this pin breaks off, the washer will not recognize that the door has been closed. In my opinion, the pin is most likely to break when you close the door and the door was not properly aligned with the door frame -- in which case the pin will be sheared off. Let me know what you find.
The Sd code on most Kenmore Elite HE washers indicates a suds lock (usually caused by excessive suds do to overuse of detergent). Check for the presence of excessive suds in the washer. If you see a lot of foam, the code is likely caused by this problem. You will likely be able to drain the washer and spin out the clothes once the suds dissipate. Run an empty cycle with 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach through the washer to help rinse out suds residue. If you see foam emerging during the empty cycle, you may need to repeat this process. You can also use Washer Magic or AFFRESH to help clean suds residue out of the washer. These products are available at your local Sears store or the grocery store. Make sure that you are using HE (High Efficiency) detergent in the appropriate quantity. You may need as little as a tablespoon of detergent in a high efficiency washer due to the low water level. You may need even less for a while since the clothes will likely have detergent still dissolved in the fibers that will emerge during subsequent wash cycles.
There are many different models of Kenmore Elite HE washers. If you do not see any apparent problem with excessive suds or need more help, resubmit your question with additional details and the full model number of your Kenmore Elite HE washer.
