How much paper gone throught the printer since it is new?
usually the pickup roller is good for 10,000-15,000 sheets.(20x500 sheet pack). if the printer went throught that much paper, then the pick up roller need to be replaced.
if not, make sure there nothing stucked on the pickup roller, and the roller is not shining (it need to be soft and rough).

Is not recognizing that it has paper, light states needs paper,it is not picking up paper from the tray

There is usually a photo sensor in printers or sometimes a mechanical switch in the paper bay which notifies the printer logic that there is no paper, it is probably this system which has failed.

If you're really lucky sometimes paper dust covers the light sensor and a quick blast of compressed air resolved it, other than that its a repair job.

Dell 1700 1710 series printer. Paper not picking up trick....

Here's a quick tip. If your Dell 17XX series (not confirmed for newer than 1710dn printers) is no longer picking up paper from the tray, it MAY be from worn out rollers. Try this tip to get it going while you wait for a replacement roller to get to you:
1 - remove the paper tray
2 - remove toner
3 - flip printer upside down (exposing the rollers)
4 - remove the rubber on the roller
5 - invert it. (turn it inside out)
6 - replace rubber back onto roller (still inverted)
7 - test print.

If this doesn't work then the problem is likely a paper setting (set to legal or something) Good luck.

Dell 1700 printer doesn't pick up paper - have reversed the rubber rollers and still isn't picking up

It sounds as though the rollers are needing to be totally replaced. There are other rollers as well and pickup pads that need replacing after awhile. I suggest taking it to a Lexmark dealer as the Dell and Lexmark printers usually take similar parts. They may even sell you the parts to replace yourself if you know what you are doing.

Have 1700 that picks up paper then stops after pick up

We use these printers in the computer labs at the school district I work for. The easy inexpensive fix is to turn the rubber bands on the rollers inside out.

2 Dell 1700 printers both have started jamming pages

Easy fix. Replace the pick up rollers. There cheap and easy to replace. It make perfect sense, bought at the same time and use the same amount then the pick up rollers are going to wear out causing paperjams at the same time.

Dell 1700 will not feed paper

If your Dell 1700 laser printer is not pulling paper all the way, try cleaning the pick up rollers.

To access the pick up rollers. Turn off the printer. Unplug everything from the back of the printer. Take out the toner/drum and set this aside out of the light (the drum is effected by light). Remove the paper tray. Set the printer on its backside. The rollers are located on the underside of the printer where you just removed the paper tray. You may have to move a blue flap to get at the rollers. Take a damp paper towel and clean these off. Another possible solution is to take the grey rollers off and turn them inside out and then place them back on the printer.

The pick up rollers should not be shiney, or cracked and dryed out. If they are, they will not pick up the paper to feed it into the printer. The tires should have "traction" to them so that they can grip the paper and feed it into the printer.

Once you have the tires cleaned off or turned inside out and placed back on reassemble the printer and try printing.
