PC running extremely slow, malware suspected; Replaced SATA HDD. Reinstalled windows XP, Pro., S/P2, still extremely slow. Removed 1 GB RAM (originally had 2 sticks of 1GB PC2700 DDR) no improvement. Exchanged other stick of 1GB RAM, no improvement. inside of case is fairly clean. Do I have a bad mother board?

Your System may be slow due to following reason
- Missing Windows updates or outdated drivers
- Not enough hard drive space, too many unused programs
- Left over programs, old cached and temporary files

- Too many programs running at startup or in the background
- Data Corruption, hard disk fragmentation
So Follow these steps to fix computer problem::
- Delete all the temp files
- Remove unused programs
- install latest drivers from the manufacturer site
- Install and run antispyware software
- Free up wasted space with Disk Cleanup tool
- Defragment your hard disk drive
If you are unable to perform above tasks then use a single utility tool like PC Fresher that will fix windows errors that cause of system slow

SOURCE: 1gb pc2700 333mhz ddr wont work

You may have just bought a stick of gum! This ram could have been sold on e-bay for any number of reasons. It's not likely that you can get your money back. Sometimes even identical appearing ram won't function with original ram. Check with tigerdirect.com on the web for ram and other computer parts. Good luck!

SOURCE: Installed 2 GB of Ram

One of the RAM modules may be bad. Try each one individually to see if that is the case.

First of all, make sure you have the right memory - 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200 MB/sec.

Your machine should support the memory as it has two banks of 1. Sometimes it is simply a sequence problem. In older machines with mixed memory, I always put the largest and fastest in the first slot. You might try just reversing the memory.

Dear i am using ms-7142 v-1 motherboard. now i,m using ide 80 gb hdd.now i want to connect 160 gb sata hdd.its not showing bios also.hdd is working fine.i reinstalled os.and installed sata raid driver

first thing I would try is seeing if the sata drive is recognised on another motherboard if at all possible ,in order to eliminate the motherboard as the issue. If it is recognised on a different motherboard it is more than likeley a bad cable or a bad board .

Is this going to be surfice?

Yup this used pc has a superior processor running at 2.8 Ghz, more ram, and a better video card. Also windows 7 is a 64 bit system and it runs better even on slower pcs because its more compatible for dual core processors. Enjoy your faster pc.

I have HP Comaq Presario SR1617CL Desktop PC, part number ED870AA with a Samsung SpinPoint P80 SP1604N - hard drive - 160 GB - ATA-133, I would like to upgrade to a 500GB hard drive. I have a ASUS A8AE-LE...

XP cannot be installed natively on an SATA disk without the appropriate driver which must be loaded during the install - an extremely complicated maneuver. The best way to deal with that is to just add the new SATA hard disk: install XP on the PATA and use the new SATA for your files as a separate partition. The adapter cable can be bought for about $5 from the same shop as the hdd.
All the other modifications are just fine - just remember , the RAM will not be fully recognized and used because of the limitations of the 32bit XP.

Slow start up....windows home edition of xp

I take it you mean that it started up faster before now?

Some things that can slow it down:
1) run scandisk
2) run defrag
3) run the command msconfig from the Start>run command
Remove unnecessary programs from the startup tab. This doesn't uninstall the programs, just tells them not to start. You may have spyware and adware running.
4) run a good malware detection program and scan for viruses.
5) Install more memory. In the beginning, many companies put 512 MB RAM in the XP machines. You need at least 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly and 2GB for best performance.
