I have just got a 504 and am still learning about it. My question is, when i charge it up from USB cable the unit automatically powers up, so its charging but also running This obviously is not doing a good charge up.If i keep pressure on the power button then it all shuts down even the charge light. Is there a way to charge but for the unit not to power up ?

If you plug the Archos when it is off, wait until main screen appears, press OK button when the message about charging pops up, then press MENu and scroll down to the USB options, select hard drive mode. Please read the manual you can download at Archos official site/support/downloads
The Archos need to be plugged into an "active" USB port, giving 5volts and no less than 500mA. Some old computers or laptops could´nt reach this performance.
After removing the battery, I discovered a small brass reset button, about 3 mm in diameter, near the battery connection terminal. This was gently pressed with a pen for 15 seconds. After refitting the battery, the unit was fully functional again. This reset results in needing to set the clock again. No other settings are affected.
I had the exact same problem, I looked a bit on the net and I found the answer. What you have to do is push the reset button when your archos isn't plugged on. The reset button is located behind the battery ( you'll have to the remove the battery ) near the pins that connects the archos to its battery. It looks like a gold circle and if you push it you'll see it's a button. After pushing the reset button try to put the battery on back again and replug your archos, it should work normally now. Good luck !
