When I turn the camera on to take photos, the display lights up with the pentax sign, the lens comes out. there is a beep and the lens retracts and the camera turns off. I can view photos on the disc but cannot take photos.
I had the exact same problem with mine. At least it sounds like the same problem. Fortunately mine was still under warranty, so I called Pentax. They knew what the problem was immediately. A "Power-drain" issue that they'd had a lot of calls about. They had me send the camera back and they fixed it free of charge. You might try calling them and suggesting that it sounds like you have a power drain problem. Good luck.

the batteries needed for the cameras are quite high powered
though the batteries show that they are fuly charged most times they have lost their actual capacity of power storage in them so not being able to supply enough to start the camera best way to test this is to start the camera on preview mode if this works then you will need to buy a new set of rechargable batteries, i would suggest to take batteries in the range of 2000MAh to 2500MAh and
the normal batteries will not be able to sustain long even for normal lens open and retract functions, instead of normal batteries try LR6 varieties (eg: Duracell, Energizer, etc)
does anything on the screen change when you press the display button? will the lens open? have you tried taking photos without the memory card in the camera?

i had the same problem after letting the battery run very low. when i turn the power on, the camera beeps and turns off after a few seconds, the lens would not extend. i took it to a shop in china and they fixed it for about $25USD. i had the camera for 5 year now but it was worth $25 to get it fixed.
ok have same problem press the power button and and the play> button at the same time. your screen will come on but not lens. then hold the play button down untill lens come out. this will work for you , you may have to do it a couple of times but it will work
Bassie - did you resolve this? My computer recognizes the camera just fine. I have photos on my card but when I try to download to my computer, I don't see any photos. I've emailed Pentax several times w/ no help to this problem. Do you have automatic MS updates set on your machine? What Virus protection do you have? I've run into problems w/ another program conflicting w/ virus protection software.
