How To Hook Up Tivo Series 1 With A Digital Cable Box?

We have a Series 1 Tivo with no subscription which we use like a VCR. Our cable company has is moving analog channels to digital so now we need to install and use a digital cable box if we want to continue getting all of our channels. Is it going to be possible to have both the box & the Tivo working together? If so, how do I go about hooking it all up and using it? TL

How to hook up vcr when using a cable box

That will depend upon what you want to do. If you plan to record to the VCR from the cable box, then the cable box will need to directly connect to the VCR, then the output of the VCR is connected to the TV. Unfortunately, most VCRs are analog, not digital, so you will lose HD capability (if you have it) trying to connect this way. You also cannot record one show while watching something else (you will need to be tuned to the channel you are recording). If you want to simply use the VCR to view recorded tapes, then connect the cable box to the TV as per the cable company recommendations, and then make a second connection for the VCR. Of course, your TV will need appropriate and available jacks on the rear to do this. It is difficult to give specifics without knowing the models of the cable box, VCR, and TV.

I have purchased Samsung 550 - series L5 - I don't seem to be able to hook up the VCR to it to record. I have cable on it and I would like to be enable to record programs. Television ask if I want to...

You don't record from TV, you record from cable so cable needs to be hooked up to input on VCR.
If you don't use cable box you would hook cable to VCR then out of VCR to TV. If you use cable box then you need to connect Video and Audio outputs on cable box to Video and Audio inputs on VCR and switch input of VCR to Line input.

I'm getting cable channels but no high def

Your TiVo is only recording basic cable (i.e., channels it can receive without a cable box). You will need a digital cable box from your cable company to record channels above 99. If your TiVo is a Series 2 you will not be able to actually record in HD either. You should be able to record the HD channels from the cable box, but they will not be HD quality. (This is my current setup and while the picture quality is much better than basic cable, it pales compared to bypassing the TiVo and watching HD directly off the cable box to the TV.)

TiVo installation

Since the Series2 doesn't do HD, you don't need any fancy connections, and it's pretty simple to hook up.

1) Disconnect the cable that's connecting your cable box to your TV, from the TV end.
2) Connect the end that *was* connected to your TV, to the "input" on the Tivo.
3) Get another piece of the same cable (coaxial cable), and connect the output of the Tivo to the input on your TV.

That's it.

You may just need to go to Best Buy and get a piece of coaxial cable to connect the Tivo to the TV.

If you need further help, let me know.

Connecting my Humax Series 2 Tivo to a Motorola HD DCH3416 Cable Box

Yes, the Tivo will just record in standard definition, instead of high def.

You can still hook the two up together, though.

What I would suggest (and have done in the past) is this:
Split the cable coming out of the cable box.
Hook one up to your HD cable box, and the other up to the Tivo.
Hook the output of your HD cable box to one HD input on your TV
Hook the output of your Tivo up to a different (non-HD) input on your TV.

This will allow you to watch HD while recording standard definition, and vise versa.

Running the HD through the Tivo will work, but will limit you to not be able to watch HD through it.
