Capacitor smoking powered on the unit and got a frying sound coming from the unit, when I opened I couldn't follow the smell due to the strength of it. Plugged it in with case off and found a capacitor located near the fan smoking and burning. Any suggestions besides taking it to a repair shop? still runs just smokes......(not going to run it because it will fry the board most likely)

There was a power surge and my Brother Innovis 600 sparked loudly with smoke coming out of the vents. It won't turn on. What do I do?

Hopefully this has a built in power supply. This would be the first place to look at. When the smoke comes out it is not a good thing !
I would check the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply circuitry. You may be lucky and could get away with only needing a replacement power supply , however other components may have been damaged there is no way of knowing if the power supply blowing up protected the other circuits in your device. if smoke had not come out I would check for fuses but with smoke a voltage regulator , capacitors in the power supply or even power diodes could be smoked and broken.
Find out by smelling what smells of smoke to narrow down the damage location.

Electrical burning smell coming from control panel on westinghouse dishwasher

Had the same issue with a 903sa. Strong burning smell. Continued to run for a while then just died. Opened the control panel (4 screws holding the plastic part at the top of the door on - open the door to access).

Mains feed into the controller was totally fried. Case was all melted. Very nasty. There was nothing obvious on the Board other than a mains resistor that looked like it had been pretty hot at some stage. The three pin mains connector (at least I think it was 3 pins) was just a big, charred bit of goop.

No sound or picture on a sony ke p42m1 tv

press power button, press menu button. do you get a menu? if so, might be loose connections or faulty ground lead connections. with power off, reseat (unplug one, plug back in, repeat on all connectors) connectors on all the boards (including speaker cables).

Then carefully, with the unit on, check all the ground cables to ensure they are all screwed in tightly.

If the television has a menu, there could be a problem with the input board itself. Might not be grounded, might be bad altogether. If it looks fried and smells fried, its probably fried.

Can a dryer heating element smoke if dryer is not running?

Something fried and is shorted. Unplug this unit right away. There are a few sensors on this that could have overheated as they failed causing this smoke and smell, but UNPLUG UNIT!!! Then look at what has fried.

I recently revisited my car after a few weeks out of my hands, and seconds after turning the key and the unit powering up, the sound of popping and shrapnel in the amp was heard and the smell of smoke...

What has probably happened is a short somewhere in the amplifier. Here are some possible scenarios:

1. When the new capacitors were installed, make sure that no solder shorted any pads on the circuit board to anywhere else.

2. There is probably a resistor upstream of the capacitors that has shorted but still appears to be fine. Look at the circuit board & follow the traces that connect to the 2 terminals of each capacitor and follow them to other components. Examine them very carefully. Pull on the wire terminals of upstream & downstream components to ensure they are solid. Check each side of the component with an ohm meter. If a zero resistance is given, or no (open) resistance is given the component could be in question. To properly check it out, one side of the resistor must be pulled up from the board, then check the resistance again. If out of spec, it would need replaced & then it would properly voltage limit the capacitors, keeping them from going up in smoke.

3. This can be a very tricky problem without a schematic. See if you can get your hands on one, it makes circuit tracing much much easier

I smelled smoke and turned computer off.

For sure, especially if you smelled smoke. Although it could b one of the cards or even power supply. You'll have to open it up to see for sure.

KitchenAid KHHS179lss, fried magnitron?

If your magnetron was shorted, the unit would not heat at all.

The sound of a shorted magnetron is usually a loud hum-- but no or very little smell and no smoke.

Components in the High Voltage section -capacitor, diode- give problems if they short out.

TV on, sizzling sound, smell smoke, picture goes out but TV still on

It could be any number of components on the main board/power board which could be frying..But if you are hearing a sizzling sound, it could be something probably like a capacitor or the board itself. Difficult to say unless it is opened. First thing, though, is unplug the TV from the mains as a precaution against fire.
Since you are a technical guy, it shouldn't take you long to figure out what the components are thats burning. However, if your TV is under warranty, I advise against opening up the set as that will void your warranty. However, if its not under warranty, go ahead and open up the set and see what components need replacement, or replace the whole power board itself (if you are comfortable with electronic soldering/desoldering).

Cheers!

No power to Compaq Presario

There were several recalls on Compaq's ac adapters and batteries that caused fire to units...

Check this out

I would also check with compaq about your problem. They were replacing and repairing the units free of charge due to the defects. I would check with them

Hope this helps you
