Brother Printer Cannot Print in Black

High probability of a main board electronics failure and/or waste ink chamber is full. It is probably cheaper and quicker to just replace the machine

This model printer has only two slots for ink cartridges. One is for a black ink cartrigde and the other is for a tri-color cartridge which contains cyan, magenta and yellow inks.
This tri-color cartridge has run out of yellow ink, you need to replace this tri-color cartridge.

You can find the user's guide here which lists all the parts and supplies. Here's the cartridge information from the manual:

• HP Color LaserJet black print cartridge Standard black cartridge CE260A
• HP Color LaserJet black print cartridge High-capacity black cartridge for CLJ4525 models only CE260X
• HP Color LaserJet cyan print cartridge Cyan cartridge CE261A
• HP Color LaserJet yellow print cartridge Yellow cartridge CE262A
• HP Color LaserJet magenta print cartridge Magenta cartridge CE263A

You can use the HP numbers to look for original or after-market replacements.

The HP 99 cartridge is used if you would like to print photos. The HP 99 replaces the HP 96 (black) cartridge in your printer. The HP 99 cartridge has black, photo magenta, and photo cyan inks in it. When you pair this with the cyan, magenta, and yellow in your HP 97 (color) cartridge you have the full set of photo colors represented.

Try remove all cartridges then put back it one by one.Make sure the color cartridges are not empty too.The printer need all cartridges not empty to initialized and working.

Your printer uses the following cartridges:

HP 74 - Black ink
HP 75 - Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow ink
HP 99 - Photo Black, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta

You need Photo Black, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light Cyan, and Light Magenta to print photos. To accomplish this you install the HP 99 photo cartridge where your HP 74 black cartridge usually goes and you keep the HP 75 color cartridge where it's at. I don't know why your printer told you to remove both cartridges, then reinstall the HP 75 color cartridge.

If you go to your printer properties, there should be a setting whereby you have to select the option to "PRINT USING BLACK CARTRIDGE ONLY". Make sure this option is selected, otherwise your printer will use ALL colors even if you only print black.

Hi matt651, I had the same problem with the DCP-350. As soon as one of the colour cartidges was empty, which happened frequently due to the high ink loss during the cleaning process, the machine stopped working, even when I only wanted to print using black. This is how i worked around the problem using a piece of grey card stock: The tanks have a small clear window that lets you see the ink in the cartridge. This window also triggers a photocell which sits in a little black fork at the back of each of the printer's ink cartridge slots. When the ink levels are up, the cell is blocked, thereby indicating a full cartridge. When the ink level in the cartridge drops below the photocell, the cell switches over, indicating an empty cartridge. So in order to simulate a full ink catridge I removed the offending empty one and instead slipped a piece of cardboard into its slot, thereby fooling the photocell. And hey presto, when I switched the printer back on, all ink cartridges thus manipulated were shown as being "full" and I could continue printing.

If you have a newer print cartridge cart, look for the little window. I put a sticker over the little window on the Brother (innobella) LC38 cartridge cart and it worked great :)
Despite finding a fix for this problem, I think this is a rip off setting on the brother printers and I will never buy another Brother printer for this reason.

What error does the machine show up?
Plz give some more info in detail!!!!!
