To charge the battery, choose one of the options below:
Connect the device to your computer (not your keyboard) using the included cable to charge the battery and sync. Your computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If the device is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the battery may drain.
Connect iPhone or iPod touch to a power outlet using the included cable and a USB power adapter to charge the battery.
An icon in the upper-right corner of the screen shows battery charging status. If you charge the battery while syncing or using iPhone or iPod touch, it might take longer to charge. Note: If using a portable computer, make sure it is plugged into power and that the lid or display is open. If the lid is closed, the computer may go into standby, sleep, or hibernation mode and iPhone or iPod touch may not charge. Important: If iPhone or iPod touch is very low on power, it may display one of the following images indicating that the device needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it. If the device is extremely low on power, the display may be blank for up to two minutes before one of the low-battery images appears. If you don't see the white charging or plug icons, your iPhone or iPod touch may be connected with a FireWire cable. Disconnect the FireWire cable and connect the iPhone or iPod touch to a USB cable or dock. that should be everything you need to know about charging an iPod Touch. Try to reset it. Press and hold the
Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten
seconds, until either the Apple logo or battery symbol appears. If the battery symbol appears, continue to
charge iPod touch until it is fully
charged.
If this doesn't work, try restoring the iPod from within
itunes.

Connect to the internet and install the latest version of iTunes from the Apple website.
Make sure your iPod Touch is connected to your computer.
Pick "iPod Touch" in the Source pane of the iTunes program.
Click on the Summary tab.

recovery mode.
Return to the above section and follow those steps to restore your iPod Touch.
hold down the power button and the home button at the same time for a couple of seconds. it will then restart and then plug it into your computer to charge. it worked for mine. hope it works for yours
Your battery is most likely dead to the point where it can no longer hold a charge, which is the reason that when you unplug it from the computer, it dies instanly. Batteries are pretty cheap going up to about as high as $25 and if you get it done at a ipod place, installation should not be that much.
Leave it plugged in for about 10 minutes. The battery just needs to charge a little more. Then you can come out of sleep mode.
If it is locked in sleep mode. Just hold the power button down to shut off the computer. Let it charge, you can now reboot, and keep charging after about ten minutes.
It is natural to ipod the screen will be dark if has no power unless the LCD of your iPod is defected even it has a powerits remain dark that’s the symptom of defected LCD screen. I hope your problem is a power failure only. Make sue your iPod is fully charged and then toggle the hold switch on and off. Then reset your iPod nano; Toggle the Hold switch on and off,(Slide it to Hold then it off again). Then press and Hold the Menu and Center (select0 buttons simultaneously until the apple logo appears ,about 6 to 10 seconds .You may need to repeat this step . If you having difficulty resetting your iPod set it on a flat surface .Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center. Then If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Try your iPod nano with a different USB port on your computer, not a USB port on your keyboard or hub. iPod will stop charging if the computer, or portable computer, it's connected to enters standby, hibernation, or sleep mode. To charge your iPod, connect it directly to a computer's USB port and make sure standby, hibernation, or sleep mode is turned off. If using a portable computer, make sure it is plugged in to a power source and that the lid or display is open. If the lid is closed the computer may go into either standby, sleep, or hibernation mode and iPod will not charge properly. If you have an Apple iPod USB power adapter you'll be able to charge your iPod without leaving your computer powered on. If all procedure above for power to on is not working then its better to replaced the battery with anew one so its works normal again. Hope it may help you; Regards; VOTIT
Try this: Press and hold the wake/sleep button and the home button simultaneously for ten seconds and the apple logo should appear on the screen. Release the buttons and it should work like normal. Hope this helps.
