Check the heater coil for opens or shorts.

This is because ot door interlock system - the door interlock is a device that is designed to give a time delay before the door of a washing machine can be opened.

If the door doesn't unlock at the end of the cycle at all (even after 10 min) then there could be a problem with the interlock or with the drain pump (water left in the machine). The machine knows it dint't finish the washing cycle, and, because it may be possible that water is still a lot inside, the door is locked.
If you are shure the door can be opened without the water coming out by the door, simply disconnect it from the electrical supply and wait a few minutes until the door unlocks. (you will hear the unlock click)

Slide a paint scraper or similar between the machine and the latch side and push it quite hard and it should open. Mine does and I found the fix on this site!

Dishwasher will not start Is the door open or unlatched?
Make sure the door is completely closed and latched. On models with a dual-digit display, the control displays "- -" during a cycle if it believes the door is not latched. Check for obstructions (spoons, etc), interfering with the door operation. A lower dish rack that is installed backward will also cause incomplete door closure.

Check your household electrical box to see if a fuse has blown or if the circuit breaker has tripped. If the unit has a plug-in power cord, make sure it is plugged in.

Does your dishwasher have a rotary timer knob? (Some Models)
The cycle selection must match the position of the timer knob. Turn the timer knob to the beginning of the preferred cycle. The timer knob should click when you reach the start of the cycle.

Is the control lock option activated?
Press and hold the Heated Dry option (button with lock icon) for three to five seconds and the light should turn off. Instructions are also placed on the label on top of the inner door to unlock the controls.

Is the delay start option activated?
To cancel the delay and cycle, press Cancel/Drain.

Has the motor stopped for less than 10 minutes?
The motor may have stopped due to an overload. If this is the case, the motor will automatically reset itself within 5-10 minutes.

Is the Start/Resume indicator flashing?
Opening the door or interrupting the power can stop the cycle. Close the door and press Start/Resume. If the Start/Resume indicator flashes three times when you press Start/Resume, the dishwasher is waiting for you to open the door after the last cycle. Open and close the door, and then press Start/Resume.
On models where the controls are on top of the door be sure to close the door within 3 seconds of pressing the Start/Resume to start or resume the dishwasher cycle.

Is the water shutoff valve (if installed) turned on?
Make sure that the water shutoff valve is turned on.

This problem has nothing to do with water in the machine. My IQ300 regularly refuses to open on the drying cycle! You have to open the small round compartment beneath the door and pull down on the black plastic strap to the right - you may need a utensil to pry it out. What a rubbish machine.

Hi I hope you solved this by now but I thought an answer might be useful if anyone else has the same question. I am not an expert just an owner of a LG WD-1412RD. It sounds like your mum is not aware this is just the normal safety cool down period following drying (as the stainless steel interior gets very hot during drying). The Door lock sign (small red light) is on, and the display shows Cd during this time, then it beeps and the door unlocks by itself. If you need to remove your laundry earlier than this, you can press the START/PAUSE button to end the cycle (it still takes a couple of minutes). I had to pull the J3 connector off of the control module located just behind the dispenser panel. That eliminated the cycling and the flashing lights. Maytag guy came out and told me there is a control board located on the back of the refrigerator. Circuit board cost is $180 and installation labor another $300. I think because the refrigerator and freezer are still functional I will not repair this problem at this time.

Sounds like the problem is with the control board.  There is an internal fuse in the board but it is not replaceable.  You will need a qualified LG technician to service this unit.
