Broken in half got new shell don't know how to put together
My sons ds lite has broken nearly in half so i brought a new shell for it on ebay but need advice on how to change the shell to the new one without stuffing it
Re: broken in half got new shell don't know how to put...
Much of it is pretty straight forward, the only hard part is putting the ribbon cable thru the hinge for the top screen, without ripping it, best thing to say is put the ribbon cable in first, then the wifi and mic cables (black and white), rest is pretty straightforward.

Hi,
If you yourself have replace it, I think you damage the upper LCD ribbon connector.
I have repaired a lot of DS, a broken hinge usually the cause of that problem( ribbon connector cut off ).
Check the upper LCD if that model have a seperate ribbon connector, luckily you could buy the ribbon only, if not, BAD LUCK, you have to buy a new upper LCD.
Hope that helps you out.
Thanks for asking FixYa!
Chances are the screens ribbon connectior has become loose or the screen has develouped a fault.
If its under warranty then send it in, otherwise you can take it to a local repair shop or do a bit of DIY.
Take the DS lite apart (a tri wing screwdriver is needed and can be found cheap on ebay), disconnect the top screen by lifiting the motherboards connector flap (located near the hindge) and then re-insert it, try switching it on again and see if thats sorted it. If not then you will need to replace the screen.
A new screen can be brought on ebay for a reasonable price, there will be a little soldering required as the speakers will need to be de-soldered from the old screen and re-soldered onto the new one (please take note of which wire goes where).
Remove the screws from the lid of the DS lite (4x screws hidden under little coloured squares above and below both speaker outlets) slide the top/outer part away from the hindges, it will move about 5mm and then you can lift it off... Gently pull the ribbon through the hindge so that it is free from the bottom part of the DS lite, pry the screen away from the shell (a small amount of force may be required to remove it) remove the front plastic part of the screen (with the respective DS lite coloured frame, de-solder the speakers, re-attatch them to the new screen, place the new screen into the housing along with the speakers and put back the wifi and mic to their original position if they got moved, you will notice a slot in the hindge where the ribbon goes in, this is for the ribbon to easily slide back into the bottom part of the DS lite... pop the ribbon through and then re-attatch it to the motherboard with the connector, pressing down the connectors flap.
Screw the DS lite back together and hope fully this has resolved the issue.
If you find that your DS lite now doesn't want to stay powered on please refer to my other tips and tricks I have issued on here.
I hope this helps and have to say that I accept no responsability for
any damage that may occur to your DS lite when following these tips.
There out it is nothing like a broken hinge only repair solution, the only way to get it repaired is to buy a new replacement shell and replace the broken parts or the whole shell, but some cheap shells wont last and will broke again so read reviews. And if you are not too skilled be careful when replacing or you can get your DS more damaged.
The best is to find a good case broken DS, like water damage etc. to get only the original plastic parts. I should love to have to buy only the broken parts needed but you have to buy the whole thing.
yes the shell can be replaced, you can either check ebay or google nintendo ds lite shell housing, i have seen them, doing this yourself is no easy task, there is a repair service on ebay under repair service fix nintendo ds lite
Its possible though sometimes it is expensive so dont worth the work.
-Top screen broken: you can buy a replacement and carefully do the work by yourself with the help of a guide (youtube have many) and some tools (3 winding screwdriver is the less common though not much). The foil data ribbon can be bought separatelly for the original NDS though the new NDS lite have it soldered and very difficult to work.
-Broken plastics: a broken hinge means you need to buy a replacement shell. Anyway buy a complete shell from a DS modding shop or take parts from a non broken plastics DS (water damaged one may be good) in a place like ebay. You would be lucky if you find a non broken screens and good plastics DS for parts.
At the end you may be over your repair budget and not only that, you would be very near to buy a new unit with this money. Each one make its own choice.
I recommend you to change the broken case, you can choose to change only the hinge and keep the good case parts or change the entire shell. By the way stores usually sell the entire shell so you can choose. As your screens are still working you are lucky because so often the brown flexible conductor to the top screen get broken so be careful.
You can also use a silicon or hard plastic case to put over your broken NDSL to keep it in place just as the fast non technical option.
Here are some links and you can find text and video guides googling around.
Hi Mance,
I can Repair this, but if you want to fix it yourself, you can get the parts you need from ebay. The Playstation Clinic repairs DS lites as well as other videop game systems. The replacement shell case is quite expensive, like near $40. LCD Screens are not so bad, at under $20 each. if you would like for me to repair you DS lite, contact me at [email protected]
