This just happend last night, the screen goes black, you can hear ok and just see an outline of the picture, like the picture is being blacked out. We dont have the user manual or the remote for this TV. Its hooked up to DirecTV and we thought maybe that was the problem, but works fine on another TV. When we push the Vol up or done the picture returns to normal for just a few seconds then black again, thanks for any help you can provide.

We have the SAME PROBLEM!!! What a piece of shit. My sister said that one day a creepy message popped up on the black screen something along the lines of "I'm watching you now" and she hasn't used it since.
If we hit the MUTE button twice we can get the box to disappear, but its fickle.
GOOD LUCK
This happened to me and it turned out the closed captioning on my TV were activated somehow. I never even touch the controls on the TV but I had to manually check the settings on the TV and found that the captions were on.

OK this is going to be either a tube problem or a convergence board problem, either way your going to have to get it serviced, unless your really electric savy and care to take it apart and solder pieces. There is no real fix to your problem without actually going "in"...
Check and replace the damaged component/s at its main board. Contact any service technician. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
LCD's don't have bulbs, they have CCFL tubes and they don't burn out. You have a fault in the inverter board that is powering the tubes - you will need to take the tv to a repair shop to have the board replaced.
Hi i have this tv and last night the screen went black i can hear sound ok but no picture just a black screen, Also i can see dark
outlines /shadows of whats on the tv, can you tell me please what has caused this
At first I thought this was a problem with the bulb, but as I read further into your description of the problem the more it sounded like a control processor issue. The fact that the TV acts normal when the volume control is pressed, indicates that the control processor might be going bad, or at least some of the processor biasing circuitry might be going bad. The circuitry in question is somehow linked to either the bulb control circuitry.
You will have to have a qualified TV technician look at this set to determine what the problem is
