I changed the setting for printing picture with the date on them to "on" but still the date is not on my pictures. What could the problem be?
The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

I called Canon and they said that date is not available with S400. However, you can get some programs that will print the date on the pictures yourself. Each picture has stored the date it was taken inside the picture file (embedded). Hope that helps.
SOURCE: How can I set my Fuji FinePix S700 to print the date and time on the picture?
FIRST , go to MENU of camera and look for SETTINGS , DATE & TIME , if you dont see this option then refer to the camera manual to see if you have this option, some camras have this feature and some of them dont , hope this helps AJ

Normally many cameras do not have date printing in its feature ..... while there wud a date setting ..... still try in your menu if there is any time or date stamping feature that needs to be turned on
