External/Internal Hard Drive

I have an old Compaq Armada E500. I purchase an EIDE internal hard drive. I purchase a USB to IDE/SATA converter so I can use the hard drive as an external. Now the device shows up in Device Manager but it does not show the volume nor does it show up in My Computer as a disk drive? Do I have to do some special formatting or is it just not compatible? HELP!

I'm trying to install a Western Digital Serial ATA Hard Drive into the external hard drive enclosure. There are no instructions as to what cables need to be attached and to where

USB external hard drive cases are supplied with SATA and power connectors attached to the circuit board in the case. If you canot connect it to the SATA hard drive then you may have the wrong drive case, your case may be a IDE or SCSI type.

Laptop cannot find new sata disk

Can you provide me the details of the laptop. Also; are to trying to install Windows XP OS on your notebook.

If you are trying to install Windows XP on your notebook; then we need to disable the SATA on the notebook by using the external USB based floppy drive or using the nlite application burning the XP OS disc with a set of SATA drivers to install and recognize the hard drive.

External HD device driver for Compaq Armada E500

First, try the external drive in some other "recent" computer.
Use the other computer to "format" the disk-space,
and thus make an "empty" partition. Then, reconnect it to your computer, and see if the total capacity of the drive has been detected.

According to the manufacturer's web-site:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=96717&prodSeriesId=96231&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093

this computer dates from 2001/2002. So, the claim of a maximum of 32GB probably is correct -- drives larger than 32GB were either not-available, or were prohibitively-expense, nearly 10 years ago.

Download the latest BIOS-update from the above web-site, and CAREFULLY follow the instructions to update the BIOS.

However, you have not said what happens when you connect the external disk-drive, as a USB device. It *MIGHT* work "as is", i.e., without trying to update the BIOS.

An external USB drive consists of tow parts:

a hard drive (usually a standard IDE or SATA drive), and

an enclosure

The enclosure is the box containing the drive. It also includes an interface to convert the data from the IDE or SATA interface on the drive to a USB (2) signal. Some enclosures include and internal power supply. The Freeagent has the power supply externally.

Hope that's what you mean.
