We had the same exact problem but with a Compaq Pesario V6000 series notebook. Ours had to do with the NVidia System Management Controller but was listed in the device manager as a coprocessor. Kind of a bland description.
Solution: Downloaded and installed NVidia System Management Controller from here. Hope this helps.

I will like to inform you that windows atop the support on the windows 98 OS, and in the website of the ASUS there's no support for WIN98 OS, but anyway you can use maybe windows 2000 or DOS Download here : http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
