The softner is staying in the 'softner compartment'
it has been doing this for some time now, i used to take out the soap drawer wash it then put it back, this has now stopped solving the problem and the softner just sits there till i have another go at washing it out.
the machine is 5-6yr old now, no other problems with it, touch wood!!

This is relating to the 2006 model.The times are not printed in most manuals like they used to but on this machine most probably the quickest prog. would be( 4 ) this is 3 rinses and a long spin at 40 deg. If you are experiencing long times on your washes do check that your water pressure is good as that will shorten the duration of all cycles and save on electric.
The softener goes in the smallest of the three compartments.
The powder goes in the largest of the three compartments.

Your machine possibly has a defective water inlet valve which is preventing water from entering the dispenser channel to flush the fabric softner into the machine. The inlet valve in inside of your machine right where the washer hoses attach. the solenoid valves on the inlet will need to be checked with a multimeter to verify if they are working properly.
