Due to the age of this radio, Uniden no longer has the manual for it. However, the manual for the BC60XLT-1 (link below) explains on page 13 how to enter a frequency into a channel.
http://www.uniden.com/pdf/BC60XLT-1om.pdf

The two radios are similar enough that the frequency entry instructions should work for your BC147XLT.

Also, you can find frequency information at:
http://www.radioreference.com
and then click on "database".

I have a uniden bearcat scanner model#bc148xlt and it seems to not want to take the local frequencys and it comes up error when you hit the enter or e button

You didn't mention what frequencies you're trying to program. BC148XLT coverage ends at 512 MHz, so you will get the error message if you try to program anything above that. Also, you must be sure to include the decimal point when programming a frequency into the scanner. I hope this helps.

Need the manual for your scanner? You can download/print it here:

I inherited a uniden bearcat BC147xlt! How do I

I was unable to locate a manual, but this is a basic 16-channel scanner, and the frequency coverage is probably listed on the ID plate. To program, turn the scanner ON and use the MANUAL button to stop scanning and to advance the scanner to the channel that you want to program. Enter the frequency that you want to program, including the decimal, then push the E (Enter) key. Use the MANUAL key to advance to the next channel, and program as above.

My bearcat scanner BC147xlt will not pick up codes in my area

Press the WEATHER button. If the scanner picks up a weather broadcast then you either have the wrong frequencies programmed in for your area, or it's possible that you're in a "dead" zone where you just won't receive much without an outdoor antenna. If no weather broadcast is received, chances are that the scanner's processor is "fried." Yours is an old scanner, and they do wear out.

For local frequencies, try CityFreq.com or RadioReference.com. Both have excellent databases.

Uniden Bearcat Scanner Model# BC147XLT

The BC147XLT is too old to obtain a manual from Uniden, but here's how you program it:

Turn it on & press 'Manual', then enter the number of the channel you wish to program & press 'Manual' again. Now enter the frequency you want to put in that channel, example 155.550, and press "Enter'. Then press manual to go to the next channel or repeat the first procedure to select a different channel other than the next one. Repeat the programming procedure for each channel.
