After purchasing the 504, i am none whatsoever aware how to place dvds onto the player.
a colleague has plaved some mp4 videos on my table top but i need mpeg.
im aware of the various downloads but am going round in circles trying to sort. the last version i tried was telling me it will take 11 hours to do a 1 half hour film.
WIndows Media PLyer doesn't play mp4 files, neither does the Archos unless you buy the plugin for it (podcast plugin), so try converting the file to windows media 9 format or perhaps divx (look for DR Divx a decent simple freeware converter if you need one)
Oh you can't play mpg either unless you buy the other plugin Cinema or somesuch.
I have put plenty of DVDs onto my Archos, but I use the optional cradle which connect to the TV as well as DVD players. You simply connect the DVD player onto it and play your dvd, which switching on the Recorder function on your unit.
Alternatively, can you convert the DVD onto your PC and then transfer onto the Archos in normal fashion, or is this what you are saying you tried to do already?

I hope I am correct in thinking you are asking about a DVD player.
If you have a DVD player which is designed for a region other than Europe, Japan, the Middle East, Egypt, South Africa, Greenland (Region 2), it may or may not be able to be reconfigured to play Region 2 DVDs.
any videos need to be formated for WMV. You can find free programs that will convert an MP4 to WMV for you in a jiffy. Also when placing the video onto the MP3 player, make sure to but it into the ALBUMS forlder on your MP3 player and not the MUSIC folder.
I used to have the same problem with a similar product.
Even though the website claims it doesnt need file conversions, it does! I found if you convert it to RMVB, it will play fine.
I hope this has helped,
