Once you install the video drivers, multi-media drivers, controllers for the system whatever is available there isn't more much you can do. The system will function just fine the way it is; Unless you're getting a blue screen then i suggest:
1. Download the drivers from Lenovo IBM's Thinkpad website. 2. Uninstall any drivers from your device manager that show a red or yahoo sign. 3. Open the downloaded file and let it install by itself. 4. Restart the computer
*Note: the files will be downloaded automatically in a file where the computer is automatically going to open. So do not, I repeat DO NOT change the file directory to a different location the computer will not recognize it. Once installed the computer will tell you that the drivers are install to that device. Check your device manager to make sure all drivers were install if no warning signs show up, then you're done. Good luck!

I do not use an automatic driver detection program, because they have a tendency to install the wrong drivers.
I look in Device Manager, and use the driver that matches THAT device, the O/S used, and is the newest version, (Date), with all the bugs worked out from an older version.
For your laptop that would be;
Ethernet Driver for Intel PRO/100 VE LAN that is the 49675 version, and has the date of November 8, 2002,
the T42 does not have WiFi, instead it facilitates internet connection via 16 BIT & 32 Bit PCMCIA slot to install a WiFi card , in order to go on the internet.
The ThinkPad uses the following adapters: v 360, 365X, 380, 600: 16-Bit PCMCIA v T20, T22, T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI v T23: 32-Bit CardBus and MiniPCI Daughter Card v T30: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB) v T4x: 32-Bit CardBus and LAN on Planar Board (LOB). 16- and 32-Bit PC Card adapters are configured during ThinkPad initialization. Network Interface Controller data rates are: v For Token Ring: 4/16 MBps v For Ethernet: 10 Mbps...........16 bit PCMCIA 10/100 Mbps.......32 bit CardBus 10/100 Mbps.......MiniPCI and Daughter Card 10/100 Mbps.......T3x and T40 LOB 10/100/1000 Mbps..T42 LOB The MiniPCI Ethernet adapter is accessed behind a removable plate located on the bottom of the ThinkPad directly above the Model/Type S/N sticker. For T20 and T22, the MiniPCI adapter may be an Ethernet/Modem combination card. The Daughter Card (T23) is secured with two screws and is located next to the MiniPCI modem adapter.
please go to this link to read the manual -- it will explain the features for this ThinkPad of various series T42 model-type .
