A jeweler's anvil has a squarish body and weighs anywhere from a few ounces to a few pounds. They are made of tool steel and may have stakes to embed them to a bench or other base.

How do you craft an anvil

You don't! for an anvil to be any good it should be made of carbon steel and be tempered. the process requires a very good workshop with some heavy kit and a group of people who know what they are at. Having said that an anvil is just something hard and big to bash on, go to your local scrap yard and get a big lump of steel off a digger or something and custom the shape to what you want, make sure it has a flat side to bash on and set it into somethin very solid. A post anvil is easiest, a very big old sledge hammer head set into a steel pipe and in a hole full of concrete is a very serviceable tool, but since you can buy an old anvil for less than £100 you could save a lot of work, the cheaper ones usually need the top re-grinding to flat, dont worry about it lkosing it's temper, a grinder will not heat it up enough.

I'm in the market for an anvil and have read about cast iron ones from China. I am tempted to buy once because of the great price. Would you recommend them?

I wouldn't buy a cast iron anvil personally. They tend to be junk. They are brittle and chip very easily and definitely aren't suitable for normal use.
