Yes, you will need an antenna to get live OTA TV. The Haier HL42XR1 has an ATSC (digital OTA) tuner and a NTSC (analog OTA) tuner. Your location and distance to the local transmitters will determine what type of antenna will be best. See antennaweb.org or tvfool.com and enter your address. TVfool.com gives a full list of all stations you may be able to receive depending on your antenna (indoor, outdoor, height, direction). If you share the signal from the antenna with another device, you may need an amplifier to maintain the signal strength. (Warning, when amplifiers fail, the signal can become worse than the unamplified signal. With digital TV, signals are either strong enough for the tuner to understand or a "no signal" message will appear.)
Tries websites like Amazon.com,Ebay.com to buy a Digital design antenna for a better strength longer ranges. But many of these antennas are design for mostly big tvs sit on a table tops.Just look for many of those digital design antenna choices, one of them will be snall enough and portable enough to carry with ur portable tv.
Don't throw it away just yet. It's still under warranty so returning it would be far better than throwing it away ;)
As you can tune the cable channels OK, I suspect there is a problem with the reception from the antenna and the signal strength is too low. Please can you answer the following simple questions so that I can help you to solve this problem
1. What antenna are you using - indoor/rabbit ears or outdoor/roof antenna? 2. Do you have a good reception on another TV connected to the same antenna ?
If you are using an indoor antenna, try moving the TV to another location to see if you can get a better reception.
Please let me know the answers to the above questions. I will then be able to assist you further.
Sounds like a broken backlight. That's a write-off for an old set, or a factory warranty repair (90 days labor, 1 year parts).
First make sure the TV is in TV mode (press mode on the set, or TV/AV on the remote).
Once in TV mode, press MENU and use the navigation buttons (arrows and ENTER) to choose the set to factory default mode.
Also make sure you have a working signal by trying another TV on the antenna or cable coaxial wire.
You can also try adjusting the brightness from the MENU.
If these steps do not work, call the Haier hotline listed in the manual: 1-877-337-3639
Sounds like the unversal remote isnt programmed for your particular TV. See if the instruction manual gives the details for how to do that. If not, call them to see if they can walk you through it. If that doesnt work, go buy a big screen TV.
