If the stick is the solution, why are you avoiding the solution?

From what you have said, the internal wifi in the Evo doesn't work, while
an external usb stick does.

Assuming that your internal wifi is properly configured and functional, it is
incapable of picking up your home wifi signal, though it might be functional in other situations ... Buying an external usb stick gives you a better antenna position and takes nothing away from your system, while adding functionality and sheilding the innards of your system from viral
attack as a first line of attack that is detachable.

Buy the USB stick.

I noted the fact that your internal wireless card might be present, but
even if "...configured and functional, it is incapable of picking up your home
    wifi signal"

There could be a number of reasons for this, but the most prevalent is the possibility that your home wifi signal is not in a line-of-sight attitude with
the laptop unit, and your internal antenna is not able to pick up your signal.

I have answered several queries involving diseased wifi cards (one of which involved a person's card which was infected to the point of inoperability after use at a hotel's wifi installation during a vacation.

I am trying to give you a second line of defense, since the inoperability of
your present card may owe to the possible fact of it's having been compromised.

The external usb stick may save your laptop.

The best way is to double click the windows wireless symbol by the clock and click preferences on the left. Open the Networks tab and the first option is a check box to use windows for wireless, check the box and click apply. Once again double click the wireless symbol and select your network.

Internet connection not working right compaq evo n1020v

Hello
First you will need to have the install disc for your card.Install driversoftware from cd or dvd, following directions.Once installed you should see a new hardware device has been found notification.

Next you will need to configure your card with the routers wep key or wireless security key.I am assuming wireless is activated on your router.Should see a light on the router lit under wireless,or a symbol.
1 start pc then start internet explorer.
2 Type in the top bar of ie 198.162.1.1 or 198.162.1.0 hit enter.
3 This should bring you to the routers home page.usaername=admin password=password or admin
4 Find your wireless tab or settings page looking for security area.
5 Find your wep or wireless security code, write this down.
6 Log off of router.
7 Go into network cards configuration program and put this wep code into the area provided.
8 Software may have found it automaticly, it just needs this code.

If you cant connect to router at step one use a ethernet cable from your pc to the router to log on.

Hope this helps.

I have a compaq evo n1020v, and i want to connect to the internet using wireless connection

First of all you need a router (or free hotspot) to connect to. Connecting to other's person router without prior consent is regarded as theft by the law.
To actually connect: Start / Control Panel / Wireless network setup wizard - follow its instructions.

Need help with Wifi Connection with COMPAQ EVO N610C LAPTOP

First you will need a router which will enable you to create a wireless network for your internet connection. I recommend, if you're purchasing online, to use Tigerdirect. Then you would need a USB wireless adapter for your laptop which will enable it to communicate with the wireless router and establish an internet connection.
Below are some links for the most affordable and best rated products you need.

This is just one source. I did a google search for USB wireless adapters. They are used by many users. Generally these units cost the same whether online or at the local Radio Shack, etc. because of shipping.
