Phillips 42" Rear Projection

I have 2 problems the unit is only about 5 years old. The first is the sound initially would cut off and on, however it works full time with the surround sound receiver on. The second problem is the unit would turn off after about an hour of watching. It would come back on and shut off again. My delima is, is the tv worth fixing with these two problems. The quotes I get over the telephone from tv shops ranges from $125 to $700. I can replace the tv for not much more than that.

I would strongly suggest to use the funds towards a new TV. It's most of the time a domino effect between service of your set and the next issue. Generally, once there is a problem sometimes it can set off a ray of other problems. I'd suggest to go with a newer technology. Invest in something current like DLP or even LCD flat panels are great due to no burn in, and much more affordable then they used to be. Another thing to be aware of is that by febuary 2009 everything is going to be all digital. What does that mean to you? Or your current rear projection set? It means that you would have to invest in an expensive converter box that would switch the signal from analog to digital in order to get any signal. That is why you see an enormous drop in digital display prices within the past years or so, plus lots of online companies going out of business because they cant afford to compete with electronics anymore. I hope this helps. After seeing plenty of TV issues within my 7yrs of experience in selling digital displays online...I think this is a much better route to go! Take care and good luck!

T.v.says lamp not working

If the display indicates then it is possible that the lamp has failed or that the Power to the lamp is cut off. You will need to check the status of the lamp and also the lamp connectors, the supply from the power.
Check to see if the cooling fan is clogged and so has reset the processor with a error. If so clean the filter to reset.

It shut off in 2 seconds of turning the tv on

I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors. This may be your problem
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

Philips 42PFL3603 tv sound but no picture.

Hold a flash light to the screen after it goes off and see if you can see a faint picture. Sounds like your backlight might be cutting off. Repair can be expensive but some of the newer units don't require the entire LCD to be replaced.

My Sony 54" Grand Wega rear projection TV is 4 years old in Sep. It has started losing picture and sound for a few seconds then comes back on. It is getting more and more frequent. . . like six times in 5...

A spent bulb will cause the whole set to go off. If you have not changed the bulb in all of these years, first you are lucky, and second that is probably the cause of your problem.
