My 2 yr old son pulled down on the DVD tray while it was open and now it won't stay closed. It just continually opens and closes with or without a disc. It is a Zenith DVD5201.
Any suggestions?

Have you checked to see if it is off track? Sometimes when these machines get bumpbed, dropped, or fall they can jump track. You have to take the cover off and inspect to see if it is off track when it closes and opens. It should go all the way back on the track when it closes. Be careful not to shock yourself. If it is on when you do it and your hand touches the metal parts inside you can get seriously burned or shocked.
Here are a few possible fixes : 1. Open the micro switches, cleaning the contacts and streching the springs inside the switches a little. The Problem was, that one of the microswitches stayed conductive even when it was off/open. 2. Sometimes the loading belt is at fault. There are microswitches inside which determine the limits of the tray movement. There is one that is activated to indicate that the tray is out and another to indicate that the tray is in. If the belt slips, the inner may not be activated and the system will cause the tray to come out. Try replacing the belt.
the open button could be shorted meaning the unit is constantly being told to open its tray i think its worth having looked at and i think your sons off the hook dvds are pritty hard for kids to muck up unlike the older vcr you would no belive the things kids would put in them best one i ever saw was a weat bix and a slice of toast.
Do you mean the CD tray won't stay closed? If so check the simple things first. The button that you push to open and close the tray is actually a lever that pushes a much smaller button below it. Make sure that your eject button is not stuck down for some reason. Check your cd tray and the bay to make sure nothing got inside that is preventing the cd tray from closing all the way. I believe if something gets in the way the tray will automatically re-open. You can also take some compressed air and blow out the cd tray to remove any debris that may be blocking the tray from closing.
If none of the above simple steps work I believe it boils down to 2 things. 1. An object inside the case or tray that is preventing it from closing all the way or...
2. The eject button is stuck down.
If your comfortable with it you can take apart your xbox case and remove your CD/DVD player and ensure the button works properly. You can do a search on this site or youtube for instructions on how to take the case apart if needed. Once the case is apart the CD/DVD player is easily removed. You will then notice that the switch you press on the outside of the Xbox to open and close the CD/DVD tray is actually a lever that presses a much smaller switch directly on the front of the CD/DVD unit. You can then test your eject switch directly by pressing the button directly with a ball point pen or a pin. If the bay does not open and close properly at this point it may be necessary to replace the CD/DVD player and I do not know if it can be replaced or not. Hope this helps.
I went to look at getting it fixed and wit was going to cost as much as a new device, so I pulled it to bits and found that the rubber band in the DVD player was frail. This meant it didn't have enough strenght to load the disk completely.
I went to a stationary shop and brought a new one the same size and it is perfect.
Cost. 10c.
You will need to be careful and confident pulling it to bits and some of the screws are no standard. good luck.
Alternatively there is a slot under the unit that you can force the DVD mechanism open or closed. A hassle though.
I have the dv9000z. If I do NOT push the DVD drive tray all the way in until it CLICKS shut, then it OPENS again after 1-2 seconds. This is normal. I have found that most times when I close the DVD tray drive, I am not pushing it in far enough, because the top of the DVD tray is rubbing against the laptop's case. If I just press down VERY SLIGHTLY and push the DVD tray in, the tray will fully close and CLICK shut. This works for me. Good luck.
was wondering did you get it fixed
DVD drawer will not close
