The stand by light comes on but when I press the power button nothing shows up on the tv. Opened the back of the tv and manually hit the power switch and the tv doesn't power up.

Try following the steps below.
Step 1
Press the power button once. If the TV does not turn on, observe the LED indicator, usually located on the TV's lower front panel. If the LED indicator turned off after you pressed the power button once, it is in standby mode. Press the power button once again to exit standby and turn on the TV.

Step 2
Observe the Standby light if the remote control will not work. If the Standby light stays on, the television is in Standby mode. Press the power button on the television, then try to use the remote.

Step 3
Turn the Energy Saving Switch off, then press the power button. The Energy Saving Switch is located on the rear or side panel on most Sony model TVs. Refer to your TV user manual for the exact location of the switch.

I found this answer and I believe it fits your problem perfectly.
Your TV has two microprocessors that depend on each other for communication. The problem is that a power glitch gets them out of sync. Try this:
1. Press the power button and wait for the blinking light to stop.
.
2. Press all the front panel buttons one at a time, except for the reset, and power button.
This will send a command to one processor and sets an interrupt.

3. Hit the power button, and the TV should power up.

4. Set the TV to low energy mode(see TV manual to find out how to do this. Doing this step will help prevent the problem from coming back. These instructions were taken from a Mitsubishi service manual.

On hibernation, the state of the computer is saved to the disk, to turn it on again press the power button, the computer will read the hibernation image from the disc and restore its state.

You can press stand by, from that mode the computer should come back with the press of a button, the computer might also go into stand by if the cover is closed and come out of it when opened.

upon hitting the power button, the red light showing on the front of the tv should flash a couple of times, the screen should come on and the light goes off..the red "stand by " light stays on and we cannot get the screen to come up..needless to say, cannot get to the menu to change any display options...any suggestions?

keep pressing the channel up button and switch on the tv( plug it to the power). then release the channel button and press power on.

Hi i have a pilips 42" plasma tv (42PF5320/79) i can hear clicking the green light is on and the tv will go into stand by if i press the power button and the red light also comes on .I have turned it on and off and it works now nothing just the light on the front as if its working looking at the back through the slots two green lights come on then the tv clicks and they turn off,thanks
