Below are two of the most common problems encountered with projection
TV sets.
Problem #1 - CONVERGENCE PROBLEMProjection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the
video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look
3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.
Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.
Common Symptoms include....
- Screen looks 3D
- Colors don't line up
- One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
- Screen is bowed or warped.
- TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some
photos of convergence problems.
Here is a quick test....Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.
Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.
You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.
If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.
Note: If you TV has as flash
focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a
solution
CONVERGENCE SOLUTION
You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from
www.TvRepairKits.com
What are the correct value and wattage for the resistors that should be replaced when teh IK04, IK05 Amps are replaced.
I will try. I have the repair manual for the TV but the scanned image of the PCB layout isnt so good. Have to actually look at the markings on the PCB under the resistors. Cant measure resistors in ckt can I? I want to buy a kit that has all the resistors and the two power amps and i would do the reapir all at once even if only one power amp (red and green misalgined) appears to be bad at this time.
On Dec 6th I repaired with the advice I got from this blog, awesome help to the Fix-Ya team. Parts arrived a day before (2 amps and the resistors suggested, cost about $45.00 for genuine Sanyo parts).
I couldn't completely remove the convergence board, there were three high voltage wires plugged into a large transformer like assy and I tugged on the wires and they didn't seem to want to "unplug". I was able to do the work behind the TV given the length of the wires, moving the board to remove the STK392-150's. Replaced both (with new STK392-150's), no resistors appeared damaged, left them alone, measured them they seemed to be OK. Lesson Learned....dont try to unsolder the heat sinks with a hand solder gun (left them on and pried the old converg amps off of them). Solder wick worked well on the leads, removed old parts without too much problem. Got a small tube of heat sink paste from radio shack. Direct TV guy with HD DVR upgrade showed up as I was reassembling the TV. By the time he was done with the new LNB on the roof we turned everything on, ran magic focus and alignment (and HD 1080i picture) was great. Thanks Terryfic, worthy of a wiz rank.
I have the same problem with the green line exactly as stated on the first post.. i tried to fix it with magic focus- manual no luck now when i press magic focus on the front wont work at all .. i live in london Ontario and would like to be pointed to the store where you got the set of IC's so i can go and get the same kit myself, please if you have some pictures of the board and things you changed would actually get my head straight as right now i am a bit confused..
If someone has the kit number and the service manual please mail it to me
i look forward to hearing from you... your help is much appritiated
thankyou
